NAPHTHALENE. [CAS 91-20-3], Naphdialene C10H8, is a white solid with a strong smell is also called mothballs, moth flakes, white tar, and tar camphor. Naphthalene is a natural component of fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal it is also formed when natural products such as wood or tobacco are burned. [Pg.1047]

Naphthalene, also known as tar camphor, and its alkyl derivatives, such as l-(2-propyl)naph-thalene (Figure 13.10), are important industrial chemicals. Used to make mothballs, naphthalene is a volatile white crystalline solid with a characteristic odor. Coal tar and petroleum are the major sources of naphthalene. Numerous industrial chemical derivatives are manufactured from it. The most important of these is phthalic anhydride (Figure 13.10), used to make phthalic acid plasticizers, which are discussed in Chapter 14. [Pg.302]

Naphthalene comprises two benzene rings and is the smallest PAH. The white, crystalline solid is also called mothballs, white tar, tar camphor, albocarbon, naphthaline, and naphthene. The most well-known commercial use of naphthalene in its pure form is as a household fumigant against moths. In 1989, naphthalene consumption as a moth repellent peaked... [Pg.2293]

TAR CAMPHOR (91-20-3) Combustible solid (flash point 174°F/79°C). Dust, powder, or vapors form explosive mixture with air. Violent reaction with strong oxidizers, dinitrogen pentaoxide, chromium trioxide. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings. Flow or agitation of substance may generate electrostatic charges due to low conductivity. [Pg.1118]
