Laboratory, where he worked with John Longo and Allan Jacobson on the synthesis and characterization of mixed metal oxides and their application in heterogeneous catalysis. He joined the chemistry faculty of Northwestern University in 1984 where he is now Professor of Chemistry and an active member of the Center for Catalysis and Surface Science and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center. Kenneth Poeppelmeier has published over 250 research papers and supervised approximately 40 Ph.D. students in the area of inorganic and solid state chemistry. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and has been a Lecturer for the National Science Council of Taiwan (1991), Natural Science Foundation of China (1999) and Chemistry Week in China (2004), and more recently an Institut Universitaire de France Professor (2003). [Pg.375]

This research is an outgrowth of an earlier project which sought to characterize the mechanism of arsenic metabolism in a population currently drinking arsenic-contaminated water in Taiwan. There were three parts to the study, a cohort study, a case control study for skin cancer, and a study of intra-individual variability associated with chronic arsenic exposure. The latter three research projects are complete and being submitted for publication. The results of this research are highly relevant since they indicate that alterations in methylation capacity may affect arsenic carcinogenesis. [Pg.268]

The research reported in this chapter has examined the association between pharmaceutical innovations and health outcomes, using the cumulative number of NME launches in Taiwan as a measure of innovations. Based on a disease-specific panel, we found a statistically significant, positive relationship between the stock of pharmaceutical innovation available in Taiwan s market and the probability of survival to age 65, after accounting for the economic and social trends. We investigated the effect of pharmaceutical innovation on life expectancy with two different approaches. Both approaches yielded similar results. Our low bound or conservative estimate suggests that a 10% increase in the stock of pharmaceutical innovation led to an increase in life expectancy at birth by about 0.1%. [Pg.257]

In a systematic review of the experimental and epidemiological data, Navas-Aden et al. (2006) argue that the evidence to date is inconclusive for a role of arsenic in the development of diabetes mellitus. Pooling the results from the Taiwan and Bangladesh studies, which were from extreme arsenic exposures, there was a risk of 2.5 for the development of diabetes. However, they point out, because of the types of studies conducted, particularly with characterization of the exposures, it was hard to interpret the association. In addition, the occupational studies that they examined showed increased and decreased morbidity from diabetes due to arsenic exposure. The general population studies, which typically had much lower arsenic exposures, were inconclusive. [Pg.256]

The earliest known adverse effects associated with chronic arsenic exposure were skin lesions (Yoshida, Yamauchi and Fan Sun, 2004). The effect of arsenic on skin was first noted by several physicians in the late 1800s (Schwartz, 1997). They observed the effects in patients being treated with inorganic arsenic for various aliments. The effect is more widespread in populations that consume arsenic-contaminated drinking water and is related to dose (Yoshida, Yamauchi and Fan Sun, 2004). In southwest Taiwan, the... [Pg.257]
