Taints

Aldrin is insecticidally active as a contact and stomach poison against a wide range of soil pests. It is non-phytotoxic and does not cause taint. Aldrin is toxic to humans and animals and is now less used. 

Phenol fumes are irritating to the eyes, nose, and skin. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), exposure to phenol should be controUed so that no employees are exposed to phenol concentrations >20 mg/m, which is a time-weighted average concentration for up to a 10-h work day, 40-h work week. Phenol is very toxic to fish and has a nearly unique property of tainting the taste of fish if present in marine... 

Stevioside and rebaudioside A are diterpene glycosides. The sweetness is tainted with a bitter and undesirable aftertaste. The time—intensity profile is characteristic of naturally occurring sweeteners slow onset but lingering. The aglycone moiety, steviol [471 -80-7] (10), which is the principal metaboHte, has been reported to be mutagenic (79). Wide use of stevia ia Japan for over 20 years did not produce any known deleterious side effects. However, because no food additive petition has been presented to the FDA, stevioside and related materials caimot be used ia the United States. An import alert against stevia was issued by the FDA ia 1991. In 1995, however, the FDA revised this import alert to allow the importation and use of stevia as a diet supplement (80), but not as a sweetener or an ingredient for foods. Several comprehensive reviews of stevia are available (81,82). 

Squeeze film dampers have long been used to combat rotor dynamic and stability problems that conventional bearings cannot solve on turbomachinery rotor systems. The use of squeeze film dampers in problem process machinery has tainted it as a treat-the-symptom solution, and many users shy away from using squeeze film dampers for this reason. Also, their limited use is explained by the difficulty in accurately predicting performance, particularly with o-ring supported dampers. 

A final example of application and process layout is shown in Figure 15. In this example the process relies on activated carbon to remove color bodies from a recycled glucose intermediary prior to use in the production of confectionary. The glucose containing the color taint must be mildly heated (to about 70° C), so that the normally solid product becomes less viscous and easier to pump. The syrup is...

German physician Julius Robert Mayer. Mayer s work, although historically important for its insights into the conservation-of-energy principle, was however tainted by errors in physics and an unacceptable reliance on philosophical arguments. 

The non-toxicity of aluminium coatings and freedom from taste or taint means freedom from health hazards during application and provides hygienic finishes for contact with foodstuffs, e.g. baking tins, oven trays, containers. 

In the case of some tanks used to carry wine or chlorinated solvents the final coat applied over an epoxy coating is sometimes an oil-free polyurethane enamel because this paint resists chlorinated solvents better than do epoxies, does not taint wines and is not stained by red wines. 

Schild analysis, like all pharmacological tools, necessarily is predicated on the idea that the drugs involved have one and only one pharmacological activity. This often may not be the case and selectivity is only a function of concentration. If the concentrations used in the assay are below those that have secondary effects, then the tool will furnish the parameter of interest with no obfuscation. However, if a secondary effects are operative in the concentration range required to measure antagonism then the resulting parameter may be tainted by this secondary activity. 

With electronic medical records, multiple clinical records for the same patient may be treated as belonging to different patients during anonymization and migration of electronic medical records, tainting analytical conclusions. This problem may be difficult to untangle once the anonymized data migration takes place.

The perceived risk of taint with boars increases with age and weight. Because the organic producer markets only boars or gilts, the boars tend to be sent for slaughter at higher weights, that is up to 70 kg... 

Major types of volatile constituents in polymers include unreacted monomers, nonpolymerisable components of the original charge stock, residual polymerisation solvents, and water. Frequently, complex nonpolymerisable mixtures are present. The concentration of these substances may need to be determined for various reasons, such as the effects on materials properties and the risk of tainting in foodstuff- and beverage-packaging grades. The carboxyl end can also thermally degrade to form vinyl end groups [22-24], which occur along with the formation of acetaldehyde (Figure 11). This is a side reaction that needs to be avoided, as acetaldehyde can taint mineral water and carbonated soft drinks if present at high levels (>20ppm) in the bottle polymer. Hence lower temperatures (around 160°C) are used in the SSP phase to minimise the formation of acetaldehyde. 

Oily fishmeal is allowed in organic rations and it has an even higher essential amino acid content than full-fat soya. However, its use in poultry rations is limited partly by cost, restrictions on the source of the fishmeal imposed by organic standards, the fact that some customers demand birds that are fed on a vegetable-based diet and concerns about fishy taints to the product (Walker and Gordon, 2001). 

In microtine rodents, feed aversion and toxicant avoidance were the most significant behaviors elicited by feed tainted with paraquat (Linder and Richmond 1990).
