Tail reducers are polar substances added in small quantities along with the stationary phase, and are used most frequently with nonpolar phases. Phosphoric acid is used with polyesters(7) for analysis of fatty acids and has been found effective for... [Pg.121]

The upper temperature limit of some columns may be lowered by the use of certain tail reducers because these additives are often less stable than the stationary phase itself. If columns are operated at too high a temperature there may not be any noticeable increase in bleed, but the effectiveness of the tail reducer may be lost. Because of this, tail reducers were used to a lesser degree as new column materials such as porous polymers became available. Increasing interest intrace analysis has necessitated development of columns in which adsorption is minimized, and tail reducers are used in many of these applications. [Pg.123]

In analysis of polar compounds, tailing is minimized if the stationary phase is similar in composition to the types of sample being analyzed. For example, alcohols with carbowax, esters with polyesters, and amines with tetraethylenepentamine. If these phases do not give the desired separation, it may be advisable to add them to another phase as a tail reducer. [Pg.132]

Slight deviations from the Gaussian form are insignificant and in fact may almost be regarded as normal. The preparation of capillary columns with porous polymers was first described by Hollis [21] in 1973. The styrene-divinylbenzene polymers were synthesized in situ inside the capillary. An example of the gas chromatographic separation possible on such columns is shown in Fig. 1-6 [21]. These columns were usable for hydrocarbon separations (note the separation by carbon number) but polar molecules such as alcohols have the tailing peaks characteristic of adsorption. In Hollis opinion, this is probably due to the same forces as are seen with a metal capillary column using apolar squalane without a tailing reducer [21]. [Pg.11]

With the same analysis time, neither the column filled with Graphon + 5% PEG-1500 (Fig. 5-8c), nor the column filled with Graphon + 0.6% PEG-1500 (Fig. 5-8b), where the liquid acts mainly as a tailing reducer , is able to separate all the compounds. Note that column packed with Graphon + 5% PEG-1500, where the solid medium acts mainly as support (Fig. 5-8a), also cannot be used to separate all the compounds of the mixture. [Pg.126]

Small quantities of acids and bases may also be added to the stationary phase to cover or neufralize active sites on support. They usually have the same acid-base properties of the species being analyzed and are referred to as tail reducers.
