Systemic surface cooling

Complex Coacervation. This process occurs ia aqueous media and is used primarily to encapsulate water-iminiscible Hquids or water-iasoluble soHds (7). In the complex coacervation of gelatin with gum arabic (Eig. 2), a water-iasoluble core material is dispersed to a desired drop size ia a warm gelatin solution. After gum arabic and water are added to this emulsion, pH of the aqueous phase is typically adjusted to pH 4.0—4.5. This causes a Hquid complex coacervate of gelatin, gum arabic, and water to form. When the coacervate adsorbs on the surface of the core material, a Hquid complex coacervate film surrounds the dispersed core material thereby forming embryo microcapsules. The system is cooled, often below 10°C, ia order to gel the Hquid coacervate sheU. Glutaraldehyde is added and allowed to chemically cross-link the capsule sheU. After treatment with glutaraldehyde, the capsules are either coated onto a substrate or dried to a free-flow powder. [Pg.318]

An Oslo surface-cooled crystallizer is illustrated in Fig. 18-71. Supersaturation is developed in the circulated liquor by chilling in the cooler H. This supersaturated liquor is contacted with the suspension of ciystals in the suspension chamber at E. At the top of the suspension chamber a stream of mother hquor D can be removed to be used for fines removal and destruction. This feature can be added on either type of equipment. Passive attack involving underdeposit corrosion tends to involve large system surface areas and, hence, accounts for the greatest amount of metal loss, by weight, in cooling water systems. Specific surface areas of the catalysts used were determined by nitrogen adsorption (77.4 K) employing BET method via Sorptomatic 1900 (Carlo-Erba). X-ray difiraction (XRD) patterns of powdered catalysts were carried out on a Siemens D500 (0 / 20) dififactometer with Cu K monochromatic radiation. For the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments the catalyst (0.3 g) was pre-treated at diflferent temperatures (100-700 °C) under helium flow (5-20 Nml min ) in a micro-catalytic tubular reactor for 3 hours. The treated sample was exposed to methanol vapor (0.01-0.10 kPa) for 2 hours at 260 °C. The system was cooled at room temperature under helium for 30 minutes and then heated at the rate of 4 °C min . Adsorption inhibitors act by forming a film on the metal surface. The action of traditional oil-based red lead paint formulations presumably involves the formation of soaps and the precipitation of complex ferric salts that reinforce the oxide film. There has been substantial interest in recent years in development of replacements for lead-based and chromate-based inhibitor systems. Adsorption inhibitors based on pol3rmers have been of particular interest. In this volume, Johnson et al. and Eng and Ishida discuss inhibitors for copper 2-undecylimidazole is shown to be effective in acid media, where it suppresses the oxygen reduction reaction almost completely. Polyvlnyllmidazoles are shown to be effective oxidation inhibitors for copper at elevated temperatures. Also in this volume, Chen discusses the use of N-(hydroxyalkyl)acrylamide copolymers in conjunction with phosphate-orthophosphate inhibitor systems for cooling systems. [Pg.5]

Biofouling involves the formation of biofilm, whereby hydrated algal- or bacterial-based slimes adhere to water-wetted cooling system surfaces and often contain scales, corrosion products, or other debris embedded within a polysaccharide matrix. The role of biofilms in reducing cooling system efficiency and life span is still imperfectly understood. [Pg.123]

In recent years there has been considerable interest in the development of cutting systems using lasers, which can be applied for drilling, making blanks or patterns, reaming, and so forth. The equipment can be controlled precisely and employed for a variety of types of work its effect is to vaporize the plastic—so conventional systems for cooling and removing swarf are not necessary. Radiation-induced processes at solid-liquid interfaces are of significant importance in many applications of nuclear technology.
