Syphilis cardiovascular

Syphilis, caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum, can have numerous and complex manifestations. Clinician familiarity, stage-specific diagnosis, and effective treatment are vital. Missed or inappropriately treated syphilis may result in cardiovascular complications, neurologic disease, or congenital syphilis. [Pg.1162]

As long as no evidence of CNS involvement exists, antibiotic therapy for gummatous and cardiovascular syphilis is identical to that for tertiary syphilis. [Pg.1163]

Tertiary Cardiovascular syphilis (aortitis or aortic insufficiency), neurosyphilis (meningitis, general paresis, dementia, tabes dorsalis, eighth cranial nerve deafness, blindness), gummatous lesions involving any organ or tissue... [Pg.512]

Gummas and cardiovascular Adults 2.4 million units IM once/wk for 3 wk syphilis - Latent Children 50,000 units/kg IM, up to adult dosage... [Pg.1460]

Therapy of syphilis with penicillin G is highly effective. Primary, secondary, and latent syphilis of <1 year s duration may be treated with penicillin G procaine (2.4 million units per day intramuscularly), plus probenecid (1.0 g/day orally) to prolong the tj for 10 days or with 1—3 weekly intramuscular doses of 2.4 million units of penicillin G benzathine (three doses in patients with HIV infection). Patients with neurosyphilis or cardiovascular syphilis typically receive intensive therapy with 20 million units of penicillin G daily for 10 days. Since there are no proven alternatives for treating syphilis in pregnant women, penicillin-allergic individuals must be acutely desensitized to prevent anaphylaxis. [Pg.736]

Traditional use An infusion of the roots is applied to treat tuberculosis and syphilis. A decoction, ointment, or paste is used as an anesthetic for hemorrhoids, calluses, and snake bites. Preparations of the aboveground parts are used as an antiinflammatory and diuretic, and to stimulate respiratory function, cardiovascular function, and blood circulation. A decoction is used to treat fevers, ulcers, and stomach cancer, and is apphed as compresses to treat skin cancer. A decoction of the inflorescence is used to treat rheumatism (Alimbaeva et al. 1986 Plant Resources of the USSR 1990). [Pg.97]

Tropical America Anthelmintic, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, digestive, dysentery, fever, intestinal disease, malaria, tonic (Wd), syphilis (St) [20]... [Pg.3794]
