Synthetic oxygen carriers

This review is particularly concerned with the bonding modes of the dioxygen ligand, and the factors affecting which of the various possible orientations it assumes in any particular complex. We shall therefore consider all previous work, from the earliest work on synthetic oxygen carriers, right up to the most recent studies on picket-fence and other synthetic porphyrins. All work concerned with an irreversible system will illustrate some principle appertaining to reversibility. On this basis we shall then attempt to provide a unified rationale for ... [Pg.3]

The divalent Co(salen) complex (69a) is one of the most versatile and well-studied Co coordination compounds. It has a long and well-documented history and we shall not restate this here. Recent applications of (69a) as both a synthetic oxygen carrier and as a catalyst for organic transformations are described in Sections 6.1.3.1.2 and 6.1.4.1 respectively. Isotropic shifts in the HNMR spectrum of low-spin Co(salphn) (69b) were investigated in deuterated chloroform, DMF, DMSO, and pyridine.319 Solvent-dependent isotropic shifts indicate that the single unpaired electron, delocalized over the tetradentate 7r-electron system in CHCI3, is an intrinsic property of the planar four-coordinate complex. The high-spin/low-spin equilibrium of the... [Pg.34]

If you were designing a synthetic oxygen carrier, what characteristics would be required of the metal ion Suggest some alternative choices to Fe2+ and describe the characteristics of coordination compounds of the metal (s) you choose. [Pg.815]

A polymer ligand might be expected to protect the dioxygen-metal complex against autoxidation in much the same way as the globin protein does. In this chapter, we describe how polymer-metal complexes react with molecular oxygen and introduce attempts to construct synthetic oxygen carriers. [Pg.46]

Attempts to develop synthetic oxygen carriers during the 1940s did not produce commercially useful materials45 because, in their use, there was always some irreversible oxidation which soon destroyed the inorganic complex. More recent work has been concerned chiefly with the mechanism... [Pg.28]

In spite of the many modern techniques available to the chemist, the known chemistry of polynuclear cobalt (III) complexes is essentially that deduced by Werner 60 years ago. Since his work, no new polynuclear cobalt complexes have been prepared and characterized and no new reactions uncovered. Modem work in this area is being aimed at attaining a better understanding of the electronic structures inherent in polynuclear ions, which would be of value in a variety of active fields. The chemistry of polynuclear complexes is important in such new areas as synthetic oxygen carriers, electron transfer reactions, and transition metal catalysis. The fact that these new investigations are solidly based on Werner s pioneer investigations testifies to the genius with which he opened up a new area of coordination chemistry, with only the simple chemical techniques available to him. His work in the area of polynuclear cobalt(III) ammine complexes should continue to serve as a model of solid research for some time to come. [Pg.84]

Dendrimers with porphyrin moieties at their centers have been investigated in some detail by Diederich and coworkers because of the similarity they have with biological molecules such as heme and cytochrome c [47-49]. Applications such as synthetic oxygen carriers for blood replacement can be envisioned for these materials. Also, a synthetic analog to cytochrome c could be utilized to transfer electrons in light-harvesting systems, albeit slightly different from the ones discussed previously. [Pg.5959]
