Each module has 13-19 video chapters for a total length of 30-45 minutes with individual chapters of 1-6 minutes in length each. The short chapter lengths were selected to keep the students attention and to make it easy to switch mediums if desired. The videos are stored in DVD standard MPEG-2 format and are accessible in a DVD player or through the enhanced interface on a computer. The animations integrated into the videos are also available individually (described below). [Pg.257]

Presently, in order for optical information to be processed, the information must first be converted into electrical information before it can be operated upon by control electronics. Once the processing is complete, conversion to optical information is done before transmission. The transmission medium of today is optical (optical fiber) and the switching medium is electronic (integrated circuit). [Pg.401]

Switching-Field Distribution. Both and have a strong relation with the recording process. determines the maximum output signal of a recording medium and hence the signal-to-noise ratio. ascertains how easily data can be recorded and erased or changed, but it also determines the maximum head field. On the other hand it also controls the ease with which data can be destroyed, eg, by stray fields. The lower the the more sensitive the medium is to all kinds of fields. In this way, influences the noise level as well. The squareness ratio S (= /Af ) can also be derived from the... [Pg.172]

Electrochemical polymeriza tion of heterocycles is useful in the preparation of conducting composite materials. One technique employed involves the electro-polymerization of pyrrole into a swollen polymer previously deposited on the electrode surface (148—153). This method allows variation of the physical properties of the material by control of the amount of conducting polymer incorporated into the matrix film. If the matrix polymer is an ionomer such as Nation (154—158) it contributes the dopant ion for the oxidized conducting polymer and acts as an effective medium for ion transport during electrochemical switching of the material. [Pg.39]

Automatic filters are made with either viscous-coated or dry filter media. However, the cleaning or disposal of the loaded medium is essentially continuous and automatic. In most such devices the air passes horizontally through a movable filter curtain. As the filter loads with dust, the curtain is continuously or intermittently advanced to expose clean media to the air flow and to clean or dispose of the loaded medium. Movement of the curtain can be provided by a hand crank or a motor drive. Movement of a motor-driven curtain can be actuated automatically by a differential-pressure switch connected across the filter. [Pg.1608]

The random laser is a simple optical system in which the strong optical scattering in the random medium forms an optical recurrent path. Recent reports on random lasers have described the emission of laser light by metal-oxide polycrystalline and micrometer-sized particles [46]. Because of its structural simplicity and small size, the single random laser is a promising miniature light source for optical devices, such as waveguides and optical switches. [Pg.214]

P 29] A set-up comprising a steel caterpillar mini mixer and four steel tubes attached was used, being dipped into a cylinder completely filled with a cooling medium (scale-up set-up) [48,108]. By means of a 5/2-way valve, it was possible to switch the reactants to either of the tubes acting as delay loops, differing in inner diameter and hence residence time. [Pg.467]
