Swelling and relaxation

Epsom salts, the heptahydrate of magnesium sulfate, has long been used for its medicinal benefits. When put into bathwater, it helps reduce inflammation and swelling, and relaxes muscles. People still visit hot springs and other types of medicinal waters where magnesium sulfate is one of the dissolved substances that contributes to one s well-being. The compound is also sold over the counter for use at home for similar purposes. [Pg.431]

Molecular orientations result from shearing forces in rubber mixtures just as in processing of thermoplastic melts. The swell and relaxation phenomena in long dies are, in principle, comparable. [Pg.263]

This atypical permeability vs. pressure behavior is directly related to the transformations of the free volume structure (i.e. swelling and relaxation) of the polyphenylene oxide membrane. These aspects will be considered below in more detail. [Pg.42]

Rheological parameters, such as relaxation time, shear modulus, and stored elastic energy, are determined from the extrudate swell and stress-strain data as previously described. Representative examples of the variation of these parameters with blend ratios for both blends are shown in Figs. 16-18. Figure 16 shows that relaxation time for both preblends without heating and... [Pg.616]

Even when they have a partial crystallinity, conducting polymers swell and shrink, changing their volume in a reverse way during redox processes a relaxation of the polymeric structure has to occur, decreasing the crystallinity to zero percent after a new cycle. In the literature, different relaxation theories (Table 7) have been developed that include structural aspects at the molecular level magnetic or mechanical properties of the constituent materials at the macroscopic level or the depolarization currents of the materials. [Pg.373]

Exchange of counter-ions (and solvent) between the polymer and the solution in order to keep the electroneutrality in the film. In a compacted or stressed film, these kinetics are under conformational relaxation control while the structure relaxes. After the initial relaxation, the polymer swells, and conformational changes continue under counter-ion diffusion control in the gel film from the solution. [Pg.374]

Steps 1 and 2 of polymer oxidation described in the previous section can be considered as a relaxation step. Then the oxidation is completed by swelling184 186 under diffusional control. The electrochemically stimulated conformational relaxation, swelling, and oxidation of a conducting polymer is shown in Fig. 35. [Pg.376]

After the potential step, polymeric oxidation is followed by an oxidation charge to open, swell, and oxidize the compact film. At the start, the charge consumed to relax the compacted polymeric structure is the only component of the oxidation charge. Thus any quantitative information about the... [Pg.404]

Strong evidence of the dominant Influence of molecular conformation on the properties of coals Is Implicit In the several data sets which show an extremum In the measured property when plotted against carbon rank. Examples are the extrema which occur In the solid state properties of mass density (22,23) and proton spin-lattice relaxation rate (24) as well as In solvent swelling and extractablllty ( ). [Pg.113]

Here, u2,r is defined as the polymer volume fraction after crosslinking but before swelling (the relaxed polymer volume fraction) and u2-s is the polymer volume fraction after equilibrium swelling (swollen polymer volume fraction). [Pg.132]

Sang Zhi is bitter and neutral, and enters the Liver meridian. This herb can expel wind and dampness, promote urination, benefit joints and relax tendons. It can be used when the Yin-type swelling or ulcer is swollen up or weeping, and is slow to heal. [Pg.393]

The kinetics of swelling and shrinking processes was observed under various conditions it was found that characteristic relaxation times are in the order of... [Pg.56]

In a sense, it is much simpler to consider swelling and deswelling phenomena when a gel is initially in the swollen state. In this case the polymer is already in the rubbery state and glass-to-rubber relaxation ceases to be a rate determining factor. [Pg.260]
