In 1930, he entered Swarthmore College, receiving his B. A. in chemistry with high honors and Phi Beta Kappa. He played varsity lacrosse, was captain of the team and honorable mention All-American. He met his future wife and mother of his five children, Mary Elma White, while a junior at Swarthmore. They were married on June 1936, just after her graduation from Swarthmore and his from Harvard, where he received his Ph. D. in June 1936, finishing his doctoral thesis under Louis Fieser in only twenty months. His research resulted in four papers published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. When it was time to go to college, the headmaster at my high school urged me to go to Swarthmore College, but Swarthmore would not have me so I went to Harvard with a full scholarship. MIT, Caltech, and the University of Chicago accepted me, but Harvard was the one that paid the most, and my family and I needed as much financial aid as possible. [Pg.451]

Christian Boehmer Anfinsen was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, on March 26, 1916. He earned a B.A. from Swarthmore College in 1937 and an M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939. In 1943 he received a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard Medical School. He remained at Harvard for seven more years as an instructor and assistant professor of biological chemistry. In 1950 Anfinsen assumed the position of director of the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Metabolism at the National Heart Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This move led to a period of thirty years when he split his time between Harvard and the NIH until his retirement in 1981. [Pg.76]

Alison Williams started her scientific career as a high school student when she worked part-time at the Ohio State Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, Ohio. She subsequently received her undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University, and then her master s degree and Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry. Dr. Williams has taught at Swarthmore College, Wesleyan University, and is now a faculty member at Princeton University. [Pg.4]

Brian Simboli is a science librarian at Lehigh University and a part-time writer. He attended Swarthmore College for his undergraduate work and received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Notre Dame, as well as an M.S. in library science from Drexel University. [Pg.48]
