Sutures outcome

An interesting legal case ensued in the English High Court [87], where Ethicon (Johnson Johnson) maintained, among other things, that the formation and hydrolytic behaviour of polyglycolide fibres were already known and that it was therefore obvious to use the material as an absorbable suture. The outcome was basically favourable to American Cyanamid. [Pg.22]

The middle cerebral artery occlusion model (MCAO) is commonly used in experimental focal cerebral ischemia. This technique causes hypothalamic injury resulting in hyperthermia, worsening outcome and possibly masking neuroprotective effects. Thus, careful temperature monitoring is needed in those preclinical studies. Recently, Gerriets et al. (10) introduced a new MCAO model that involves intraarterial embolizationusing macrospheres. Unlike the traditional MCAO suture model, this macrosphere model does not result in hyperthermia and yet provides reproducible infarcts. [Pg.164]

Hunter et al. examined clinical outcomes of 17 patients, age 7-60 years. Of these, eight patients received suture fixations, and nine patients received screw fixations. All patients had satisfactory results however, skeletally immature patients with suture fixation had better clinical outcomes [19]. Huang et al. reported outcomes of 36 patients (age 17-73 years) who received an arthroscopic suture fixation with four No. 5 Ethibond polyester sutures and reported that all patients obtained union within 3 months without major complications [20]. [Pg.444]

PDS demonstrated no acute or toxic effects on implantation, and thus has been used in a number of clinical applications ranging from suture materials to bone fixation devices. Johnson and Johnson Orthopedics provides an absorbable pin for fracture fixation, and bone pins have been introduced into the market under the names OrthoSorb and Ethipin, respectively, in the USA and Europe. In craniofacial applications, the structure of PDS has been examined clinically in cranial vault procedures with promising results. Advantages include the absence of observed intracranial translocation, acceptable aesthetic outcomes and low complication rates. Nevertheless,... [Pg.128]

The EndoCinch device is a suturing system that allows endoscopists to create plications in the mucosa of the LES area. The technique requires considerable technical expertise and is therefore significantly operator dependent in its outcome. Some studies have reported significant improvement in symptoms and enabled a decrease or elimination of dependence on acid-suppressive medication. [Pg.387]

Currently under investigation are several endoscopic techniques designed to bolster antireflux barriers at the gastroesophageal junction. These methods include a variety of endoscopic suturing procedures, devices designed to cause scarring after thermal burns, and injections of inert substances into the mucosa superficial to the LES. The vast majority of publications report only short-term outcomes, often of few patients with mostly mild disease and usually... [Pg.434]

Implants based on hydrogels might someday replace the need for invasive surgery. A delicate example of invasive surgery is the epineural suture of nerves after traumatic lesions. The outcome of these surgeries are disillusioning often, little or no fnnctional recovery of the nerves can be obtained. In the worst case, transplanted nerve tissue that is needed to close gaps between the nerve stumps is rejected by the body and forms neuroma at the donor site [148]. To solve this... [Pg.171]
