Sustainable development overall sustainability

As is well known, the concept of sustainable development includes three aspects, namely environmental, economic and social. Underestimating any of these facets will lead to a distortion in this equilateral triangle and to a deviation from the overall strategy of sustainability. This strategy can only be implemented when the three tasks are fulfilled simultaneously. The systems approach reveals strong interactions between the three factors of sustainable development. The sustainability will therefore be determined mainly by those parameters that affect at least two of the three factors. 

Sustainability overall objective for human beings formulated by the United Nations in the 1990s is to ensure sustainable development for future generations chemical companies have already started to translate this objective into their industry practice with respects to products developed and sold, energy and natural resource efficiency in their processes, climate protection, corporate social responsibility for the workforce as well as stakeholders in production and consuming areas sustainability as an objective also already inspired operations research and supply chain literature (see for example Zhou et al. 2000 Al-Sharrah et al. 2002)... 

Danish research communities are well represented in European research and demonstration projects in the area of fuel cells. In the period 1999-2002, 43 projects were supported by the EU s Fifth Framework program on Energy Environment and Sustainable Development (EESP). Overall, Danish partners have participated in EU-sponsored 13 fuel cell projects (For more information see the Nordic programmes). 

The REACH Regulation creates a single system for both existing and new substances. All substances are covered by this Regulation, unless explicitly exempted from its scope. The strategy of REACH is to ensure a high level of chemicals safety and a competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry.65 The benefits of the REACH system will come over time, as more and more substances are phased in. The ideas behind the adoption of a new EU chemicals strategy was laid out in a 2001 EC Communication on a Strategy for a Future Chemicals Policy (COM (2001) 88). This document took stock of the system that existed at the time and called for a new strategy based on a system for the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals - REACH.
