Surface coatings polyester-melamine

Together, antifreeze, PET, and polyester polymers account for about 98% of the ethylene glycol produced in the United States. It is also used sometimes as a deicer for aircraft surfaces. The two hydroxyl groups in the EG molecule also make EG suitable for the manufacture of surfactants and in latex paints. Other applications include hydraulic brake fluid, the manufacture of alkyd resins for surface coatings, and stabilizers for water dispersions of urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde The hygroscopic properties (absorbs moisture from the air) make EG useful as a humectant for textile fibers, paper, leather, and adhesives treatment. [Pg.153]

The term cdkyd resin has come to mean fatty acid-modified polyesters used primarily in the surface-coating field. These resins are film formers which have excellent durability, adhesion, and flexibility. The alkyds are also used in conjunction with melamine and urea resins for durable baked finishes. A wide variety of resins can be made by varyii the amount and type of oil fatty acids, polyfunctional alcohols, and organic acids. The... [Pg.953]

Industrial Paints. Stoving enamels used to spray or dip-coat machinery, domestic appliances, vehicles, and office furniture are termed industrial paints. On account of their good adhesion and resistance to hydrolysis, polyester-melamine stoving enamels provide very good protection of metal surfaces against undercoat corrosion creep. Polyester resin grades are available for special mechanical requirements (high impact resistance, hardness, abrasion resistance) or for exterior use (weather resistance). [Pg.56]

After a de-nib, spray surfacer is applied to build up the film thickness before top-coating. The surfacer contains a high level of pigment and extender (at least 35% by volume) and frequently a saturated polyester resin with a melamine —or urea —formaldehyde crosslinker. The coating is applied at thicknesses up to 35 ftm and stoved for 20 min at 150-165°C. [Pg.627]

A primer surfacer, composed most often of a polyester to be cross-linked with a blocked isocyanate or melamine cross-linker, is applied next at a dry film thickness of approximately 1.0 mil by conventional spray application. The function of this coating is to provide filling and leveling properties as well as some stone-chip resistance. Cure conditions range from 250 to 325°F for 20 min. [Pg.1301]
