A tube-plate is essentially a perforated plate with an unperforated rim, supported at its periphery. The tube holes weaken the plate and reduce its flexual rigidity. The equations developed for the stress analysis of unperforated plates (Section 13.3.5) can be used for perforated plates by substituting virtual (effective) values for the elastic constants E and v, in place of the normal values for the plate material. Collagen synthesized in the absence of ascorbic acid (i.e. without hydroxyproline) cannot form its usual stable structure. Collagen is a major component of the structural and connective tissues of the body bone, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, teeth, and skin. Small wonder that things sort of fall apart in the absence of adequate ascorbic acid to support the activity of prolyl hydroxylase. 

Periodontal disease is characterized by a sequence of chronic oral inflammation and excessive alveolar bone resorption (i.e., receding alveolar bone) that results in root surface exposure of teeth, increased sensitivity, eventual detachment of the periodontal ligament, and subsequent tooth loss. Alveolar ridge bone exhibits intrinsic porosity, a structural fragility, and a proximity to vasculature that in effect virtually ensures it has the potential to be a vulnerable site in times of rapid bone resorption, much like the trabecular-rich regions in the hip and spine. Subsequent retention of the quantity and quality of bone in edentulous jaws also becomes critically important in terms of being able to provide surface support for dental implants and dentures that are desirable for both functional and cosmetic purposes (Bodic et al., 2005) (Figure 6.4).

Some of the aches and pains you ll experience in your third trimester will make their appearances now. These include round ligament pains. These ligaments support your uterus. The pains can be quite sharp and scary when they first happen, but they re normal and nothing to worry about. Sometimes you can feel them when you sneeze, or when you move too quickly (like when you stand up from a forward bend in the beginning of a yoga class and aren t warmed up yet). Some women like to rest until the pain subsides others say it helps to keep moving. Either way, the pain will dissipate and you ll know better to slow it down the next time around.

The skeletal system is a structural framework providing support, shape, and protection to the human body. Additionally, the skeletal system provides attachment sites for organs. The skeletal system also stores minerals and lipids and forms blood cells. Bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments are all organs of the skeletal system. 

The liver is covered with an anterior reflection of the peritoneum known as Ghsson s capsule. Other extensions of the peritoneum form ligaments that hold the Hver in place. Internal extensions of the capsule provide an internal supporting framework that divides the liver into lobules and ultimately surrounds blood vessels and nerves. One of the ligaments, the ligamentum teres, is the vestigial remnant of the umbilical vein and connects the umbilicus to the inferior border of the liver. When portal hypertension occurs, the umbilical veins may reopen, leading to venous dilation around the umbilicus (termed caput medusae).

The knee also can be involved, with loss of cartilage, instability, and joint pain. Synovitis of the knee may cause the formation of a cyst behind the knee called a popliteal or Baker s cyst. These cysts may become painful as they get tense, or they may rupture, producing a clinical picture similar to thrombophlebitis secondary to the release of inflammatory components into the area of the calf muscle. Chronic joint pain leads to muscle atrophy, which can result in a laxity of the ligamentous structures that support the knee, causing instability. Maintenance of an adequate range of motion of the knee is essential to normal gait.
