Focusing on the complex area of the market where chemicals are required at short notice and in fairly small quantities, chemical distributors have developed over time into important players in the value chain from producers to consumers in a broad role, serving as supply chain managers offering a wide range of logistics and value-added services. 

If the distributor does not play an important role in terms of value-added and customer access, a direct disintermediation approach may be advisable. Such a strategy is unlikely to lead to complete elimination of the distributor, since chemical producers will not want to build capabilities speciBcaUy for the complex supply chain management of small customers. However, the distributor s role will change more to that of a logistics service provider. The approach of some of the consortia remains to be seen here. 

One company formed a cross-functional team to use the tool to help evaluate corporate SD status. Some gaps were identified (e.g., supply chain management and some stakeholder communication topics) that helped to develop corresponding programs. In addition, one of the key benefits of the approach was that it enabled learning and productive discussion within the crossfunctional team that enhanced everyone s understanding of the SD issue and its importance for the company. 

Distribution is an important activity in the integrated supply-chain management of pharmaceutical products. This chapter presented an overview of ERP from the outside and from the inside. The outside view clarified the connection between ERP, electronic commerce, and supply chain management. The inside view describe the functional and implementation elements of ERP systems, particularly in the context of manufacturing enterprises, and identified the points at which ERP interacts wifli other software applications in manufacturing enterprises. Finally, we looked at open research problems surrounding ERP and identified those that are important to fitting ERP systems into current and future business processes. 

As mentioned earlier, GIS has found application in areas important to supply chain management. These include logistics network design, routing, and mode selection. The idea in all these apphcations is to integrate the GIS with mathematical models and algorithms. Figure 6 provides a schematic representation of such a system. 

Partnerships with key suppliers and customers are an important part of supply chain management. 

The present work is an important contribution to scientific literature from a methodological and application-oriented point of view. It develops systematically the basic elements for modelling complex chemical production networks and illustrates the benefits of advanced decision support systems in chemical supply chain management. We wish the book continued success and wide acceptance.
