The DOD and NASA programs generally involve an aerospace firm that works with material suppliers to develop a material for a specific performance goal. In addition, the Government provides some research and development (R D) funds so the risk to the materials developer is minimized. In a sense, this is a case of vertical integration in which DOD or NASA is the end user and manages the complete product development.

In the search for unique properties, chemists have isolated pertinent compounds, for which they have revealed the structures and in many cases developed syntheses. For many, in general, simpler compounds, industrially feasible preparations have also been worked out. However, for most of the more complex structures, nature proves to be much more efficient and cheaper, especially in the field of chiral compounds. Therefore, nature is still the supplier of many natural products, which are useful as such or as starting materials for other chemicals and auxiliaries in new chemical reactions.

The potential user with health and safety questions is advised to consult the manufacturer directly. 

To be most effective, it is helpful for suppliers to have sales offices located in the Detroit area. Trying to discuss technical problems and other engineering business by telephone or letter is rather cumbersome and generally not the most efficient method. There is sufficient activity in the Technical Center alone to warrant assigning a market development man and/or salesman on a full-time basis.
