The reactivity of elemental sulphur, in the forms Se, S7, Ss, and S12, has been probed by a study of its reaction with o-tolyldiphenylphosphine to give the sulphide S=PPh2(o-tolyl). These reactions, conducted in solution in carbon disulphide, are second-order. Rates and activation parameters were determined the highest activation enthalpy was for [Pg.123]

Molisch s test A general test for carbohydrates. The carbohydrate is dissolved in water, alcoholic 1-naphthol added, and concentrated sulphuric acid poured down the side of the tube. A deep violet ring is formed at the junction of the liquids. A modification, the rapid furfural test , is used to distinguish between glucose and fructose. A mixture of the sugar, 1-naphthol, and concentrated hydrochloric acid is boiled. With fructose and saccharides containing fructose a violet colour is produced immediately the solution boils. In general, however, the diacetyl derivatives are unstable in the presence of water, undergoing hydrolysis to the mono-acetyl compound, so that when they (or a mixture of mono- and di-acetyl derivatives) are crystallised from an aqueous solvent, e.g., dilute alcohol, only the mono-acetyl derivative is obtained. Aromatic aldehydes react with the dimedone reagent (Section 111,70,2).
