Sulphur ethers

Whilst chloramines are less reactive than HOC1, they are longer-lived and so can diffuse away from their site of production. Those formed from lipophilic amines are especially toxic because they can permeate membranes. Chloramines are toxic for a number of reasons they can oxidise sulphydryl or sulphur-ether groups, they are unstable and can be hydrolysed to release chlorine in the form of HOC1 or NH2C1, they can react with iodide to form iodine and they can covalently bind proteins. 

The trade adulterations of calomel are chalk, sulphate of baryta, carbonate of lead, common salt, sal ammoniac, and sometimes a little corrosive sublimate. 1 For the detection of all impurities, the Edinburgh college dirocte that heat, sulphuric ether, and solution of caustic potoasa should be employed. Calomel, ff pure, is entirely volatilized by heat, all fixed impurities will therefore be found in the residue, whilst the sublimate may contain, besides calomel, the mercuric chloride and sal ammoniac. Groups which do not themselves produce explosive properties, but may influence them in the same way that auxochromic groups vary the colour intensity and shade of a dye, are called auxoplosives by these authors. We may quote hydro-XY, carboxyl, chlorine, sulphur, ether, oxygen, amine, etc. as examples of such groups. 

As an illustration of the variation caused by the nature of the liquid, it may be stated that in the experiments of Mr. E. Durand, of Philadelphia, on this subject, it was found that while 150 drops of sulphuric ether were necessary to make a fluidrachm, it required 132 of the tincture of chloride of iron, 120 of aromatic sulphuric acid, 120 of laudanum, 78 of black drop, 57 of Fowler s solution, and but 45 of distilled water, for the same purpose.

After the distillation of sulphuric ether, carry on the distillation with a less degree of heat until a black froth begins to rise then immediately remove the retort from the fire. Add sufficient water to the liquor in the retort, that the oily parts may float upon the surface. Separate this and add to it as much lime water as may be necessary to neutralize the adherent acid, and shake them together. Lastly collect the ethereal oil which separates.

Phosphorated Ether. Dissolve 2 grains phosphorus in drachm oil of pepper-mmt when dissolved add sulphuric ether, i fluid ounce mix well. Dose, 2 to 6 drops. This was recommended by Angostin in epilepsy, paralysis, and other like nervous affections. 

Evaporating Lotions. These lotions are soothing and refrigeraut if allowed to evaporate by fi ee exposure and stimulant, if the evaporation is prevented by covering the part with the hand, or a piece of oiled Bilk. They are useful applications in nervous headaches, restlessness, imtability of the skin, AfO. Mix fluid ounces each of sulphuric ether, rectified spirit, and solution of acetate of ammonia, with 3 fluid ounces rose-water. A simple evaporating lotion may be made with 1 part rectified spirit, and 4 to 6 parts water.

Karaetic Pain-KiUer for Acute Pain and Toothache. This is one of the very best receipts for relieving acute pain and toothache. Laudanum, 1 drachm gum camphor, 4 drachms oil of cloves, i dmehm od of lavender, 1 drachm add these to 1 ounce alcohol, 6 drachms sulphuric ether, and 5 fluid drachms chloroform. Apply with liut or, for tcwdhache, rub on the gums, and upon tbo face against tho tooth. 

Thus, if diluted alcohol be poured over the powder of myrrh, in the cylinder of the percolator, the fluid which first drons into the receiver is a solution of an oily consistency, chiefly composed of rosin and volatile oil dissolved in clcohol. In like manner when the powder of gallnuts is treated in the same way by hydrated sulphuric ether, two layers of fluid are obtained, one of which is a highly concentrated solution of tannin in the water of the ether, and the other a weak solution of the same principle in pure ether. Characters.—Fixed, viscid colour brownish-yellow taste acrid odour faintly nauseous. The oil expressed in England is soluble in an equal volume of rectified spirit of wine. Indian croton oil, agitated with cold rectified spirit forms a milky looking emulsion, which becomes transparent on the application of heat, but which, on cooling and standing, allows the oil to separate and subside. Croton oil is readily dissolved by sulphuric ether and by the fixed and volatile oils. 

Kodes of Application.—Internally — In the form of bolus, Tinctura Opii, or Tinctura Opii therea also Enema Opii. Although frequently given alone, it is often combined with belladonna, aconite, tartar emetic, or calomel, when required to act as a sedative and with chloroform, sulphuric ether, or nitrous ether, when employed as a stimulant or antispasmodic. As an injection, as well as by the mouth, in enteritis and inflammation of the bladder and kidneys. Externally —Liquor Flumbi Subacetatis et Opii Linimentum Opii Tinctura Opii.
