POL The value determined by direct or single polarization of the normal weight of a sugar product or process stream in a polarimeter (saccharimeter). The normal weight (26 g in a 100-mL aqueous solution) of pure sucrose reads 100% or 100° pol in a polarimeter calibrated for sucrose measurement with a standard quartz plate. 

This work also suggests other research and development directions needed to bring the price of ethanol down to an automotive fuel level. We need a lower capital cost hydrolysis process which can produce a concentrated sugar solution. We also need a fermentation process adaptable to concentrated sugar solutions to lower alcohol purification costs. Finally we need to recover and include by-product values - lignin, furfural, acids, methanol, etc. -in our income. 

Having set up a protocol for the aminohomologation of various aldehydo sugars, the value of the method was tested by the synthesis of simple natural products. The firsl example involved [57a] the conversion of 2,3 4,5-di-0-isopropylidene-D-arabinose 59 (Scheme 18) through the nitrone 60 into the W-acetyl-D-mannosamine diacetonide 61 and the deprotected compound 11, both well-known key intermediates for the synthesis of /V-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) [59,60]. Unfortunately, in this case the addition of 2-LTT (25b) to the nitrone 60 occurred with modest selectivity (ds 75% to the best) therefore, the overall yield of 61 was quite low (29%). 

Phenylselenyl chloride adds to the double bond of the glycal 26 to give a phenyl-selenoxonium ion which is tra/w-opened by an approaching nucleophile to the glycoside 27. Other electrophiles have also been used likep-toluenesulfonic acid, bromine, or iodine. Acid conditions, however, may cause destruction of labile 2-deoxy sugar products and the value of such reagents will be diminished by this evident disadvantage.

In addition to white flour and white sugar products, eliminate white potatoes and white rice. These foods are highly acid-forming and offer little or no nutritional value, yet they cause the same rapid blood sugar fluctuations as white sugar.

A different approach is provided by the utilization of carbon sources that have a considerable market value and do not constitute waste materials, but are produced in a process integrating the fabrication of the carbon substrate and PHA. This has been implemented on a pilot scale by the company PHB Industrial in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Starting from sugar cane, the company produces saccharose and ethanol. The waste streams from the sugar production (bagasse) and the bioethanol production (fusel alcohols) are used for running the PHA production and making it economically competitive.
