Sugar in Candy and Carbonated Beverages

It is estimated that in 1952 carbonated beverages accounted for approximately 2,122,000,000 lb. of sucrose and glucose used in the United States (88)y and that the confectionery industry used about 2,225,000,000 lb. Acting upon the basis of the facts and in the interests of good health, the American Dietetic Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Dental Association have each made public announcements of policy regarding candy and carbonated beverages. The statement of the American Dietetic Association is given herewith (89a)  [Pg.804]

This policy is established because our association is concerned professionally with the improvement of the nutritional status of human beings. We are concerned with the healthy individual as well as with the sick person and with children as well as adults and older people. And all of these groups must be considered when we recommend the use of any food or dietary supplement. A professional organization such as the American Dietetic Association must meet its responsibility to the general public on problems of food and nutrition, and particularly in regard to the nutrition of children, and not accept foods and drinks which may contribute to nutritional injury of children... [Pg.804]

Candy and soft drinks are delightful developments of our civihzation, but many persons use them in great excess and without suffcient regard for necessary foods which they may displace from the dietary. When used in moderation and with good oral hygiene, they may give pleasure without being appreciably harmful. [Pg.804]
