The core-realizer/total-realizer distinction employed here is somewhat different from the one I have employed elsewhere, for example, in Shoemaker (1981). That applied to property realization rather than to realization by states of affairs. On that account, it might be that a core-realization of pain is G-fiber stimulation and that the associated total realization is Gfiber stimulation plus the subjects brain being wired in such a way as to enable Gfiber-stimulation to play the causal role of pain. But on the present account, states of affairs involving the wiring of the brain that enable the implementation of the causal role of pain would count as parts of the core of pain realizer. In the early 1930 s, when the prime research aim was the commercial synthesis of the sex hormones (whose structures had just been elucidated), the principal raw material available was cholesterol extracted from the spinal cord or brain of cattle or from sheep wool grease. This sterol (as its 3-acetate 5,6-dibromide) was subjected to a rather drastic chromic acid oxidation, which produced a variety of acidic, ketonic and hydroxylated products derived mainly by attack on the alkyl side-chain. The principal ketonic material, 3j -hydroxyandrost-5-en-17-one, was obtained in yields of only about 7% another useful ketone, 3 -hydroxypregn-5-en-20-one (pregnenolone) was obtained in much lower yield. The chief acidic product was 3j -hydroxy-androst-5-ene-17j -carboxylic acid. All three of these materials were then further converted by various chemical transformations into steroid hormones and synthetic analogs ... 

Any computation, whether performed by a slide rule, computer workstation or brain, is inherently a physical process, and as such is subject to whatever laws and limitations apply to physical systems in general. It is a natural question to ask, then, whether there exists a fundamental thermodynamic limit to computation i.e.

This subject deals not only with the use of spontaneous chemical reactions to produce electricity but also with the use of electricity to drive non-spontaneous reactions forward. Electrochemistry also provides techniques for monitoring chemical reactions and measuring properties of solutions such as the pK, of an acid. Electrochemistry even allows us to monitor the activity of our brain and heart (perhaps while we are trying to master chemistry), the pH of our blood, and the presence of pollutants in our water supply.
