Kinetics is the study of the factors which influence reaction rates. Enzyme-catalysed reactions are subject to the same principles of rate regulation as any other type of chemical reaction. For example, the pH, temperature, pressure (if gases are involved) and concentration of reactants all impact on the velocity reactions. Unlike inorganic catalysts, like platinum for example, there is a requirement for the substrate (reactant) to engage a particular region of the enzyme known as the active site. In biological systems, electron transfer kinetics are determined by many factors of different physical origin. This is especially true in the case of a bimolecular reaction, since the rate expression then involves the formation constant Kf of the transient bimolecular complex as well as the rate of the intracomplex transfer [4]. The elucidation of the factors that influence the value of Kf in redox reactions between two proteins, or between a protein and organic or inorganic complexes, has been the subject of many experimental studies, and some of them are presented in this volume. The complexation step is essential in ensuring specific recognition between physiological partners. However, it is not considered in the present chapter, which deals with the intramolecular or intracomplex steps which are the direct concern of electron transfer theories. [Pg.5]

This review is intended to cover most of the aspects of NMR in phosphorus chemistry, especially stressing those aspects directly related to electronic and structural factors. Some subjects will only be briefly reviewed, e.g. resonances in solid compounds, in metal complexes [this subject has been treated in a previous article in this seriesa969,1)] and biological applications. All the compounds reviewed are tabulated in either Formula Index I (inorganics) or Formula Index II (organics), the whole comprising of more than four thousand five hundred entries. Use of Internal Standards The use of internal standards envisages different possibilities. The procedure described here is based on two internal standards. Once thawed, fish sample were dissolved in TMAH, ethylated with NaBEt4, extracted into iso-octane and subjected to GC-ICP-MS for the identification and quantification of Me-Hg and inorganic Hg2+. For the correction of procedural errors two internal standards were used. The sample pretreatment was corrected by the recovery factor of the spiked dibutyl-dipentyl-Sn (DBT-pe), while the GC-ICP-MS measurements were controlled by the signal stability of Xe added to the GC carrier gas [47], In another application propyl-Hg was used as an internal standard to correct for matrix-induced ion signal variation and instrumental drift [65]. [Pg.718]

Mechanical activation of mixtures involves the dispersion of solids and their plastic deformation. These processes cause the generation of defects in solids they also accelerate the migration of defects in the bulk, increase the number of contacts between particles, and renew the contacts. All these factors provide chemical interaction between solids initiated by mechanical loading.
