The monoethanolamine-hydrochloric acid buffer has a buffering capacity equal to the ammonia-ammonium chloride buffer commonly employed for the titration of calcium and magnesium with EDTA and solochrome black (compare Section 10.54). The buffer has excellent keeping qualities, sharp end points are obtainable, and the strong ammonia solution is completely eliminated.

Colour Test. Dissolve about 0.5 mg in 5 ml of ethanol and add 2 ml of strong ammonia solution and a few drops of ethyl cyanoacetate—violet add 5 ml of sodium hydroxide solution— brown-yellow. The violet colour is destroyed on the addition of acid or on exposure to sunlight.

Strong ammonia solution occurs as a clear, colorless liquid having an exceedingly pungent, characteristic odor. The PhEur 2005 states that concentrated ammonia solution contains not less than 25.0% and not more than 30.0% w/w of ammonia (NH3). The USPNF 23 states that strong ammonia solution contains not less than 27.0% and not more than 31.0% w/w of ammonia (NH3).

In a positive test for chloride, this precipitate dissolves in strong ammonia solution and is then regenerated upon neutralizing the ammonia with the HN03. Perform Step 5 to observe this.
