Pull wire igniters are used in many small signaling devices. Ignition is accomplished using friction between a striker composition coated on a wire and a match composition in a small cup.

Initiators are usually compositions from which the desired results are obtained by the interrelation of the components. This is of particular importance in the manufacture of percussion caps which are fired by striker pins to give a hot flame capable of igniting propellants and should therefore have ability to detonate. 

New possibilities appeared with the use of nonbreaking impact tests. The question is how a high-speed striker with a low energy can induce damages and what the residual energy is. These tests are very often performed on composites with thermosetting matrices. 

Some of the equipment necessary to produce a fuze of this complexity is hard to come by, so an alternative has been developed. Common solder wire is used as a substitute for the lead tab, and 1/2-inch copper pipe parts and various hardware items make up the body. Solder comes in various sizes and metal composition. By experimentation, these instructions will yield a reasonable delay. If a longer delay than can be accomplished with available solder is needed, lengthening the slot in the striker and using additional solder strips might work. The striker power might have to be increased so it can detonate the primer after cutting through multiple solder strips. 

In Japan industrial fuse(Bickford) has recently been used in place of the hand made fuse the manufacture of the latter is quite labour intensive. In order to catch fire from some other heat source or to transfer the fire to other pieces the two ends of a cut fuse are pasted with a slurry of a prime composition. Sometimes a match composition which contains chlorate is pasted on one end so that it is ignited when it is rubbed with a red phosphorus striker. In general the slurry is a mixture of black powder and 10% nitrocellulose solution in acetone. In place of the nitrocellulose, celluloid solution can also be used. The ratio of the black... 

An igniter must be perfectly separated from the striker,i.e. the striker must be packed perfectly, e.g., with a piece of paraffin paper or placed in an isolated space so that the red phosphorus composition on the striker is perfectly separated from the prime composition. Actually about twenty years ago an accident occurred during the transportation of a packed case of toy fireworks called Bengal Match by a porter in a Yokohama warehouse. It may be that it was caused by an imperfect isolation of the striker.
