Story outlines

For this project, we have decided to choose Icarus as our protagonist however, to demonstrate how profoundly different the plot could be were we to choose Daedalus, we will give a synopsis for a longer, live-action project about Daedalus after the story outline about Icarus. 

One of the most valuable tools we have for structure is the story outline, wherein each step briefly describes a full scene—ideally a scene that furthers the action. 

In the short script, where dialogue is best kept to a minimum, a detailed story outline can occasionally serve the purposes of a first-draft screenplay. There are students who prefer to answer the questions and move directly to a rough draft. If this second method is your choice, you will probably find that writing a bare-bones outline of this draft can help you spot problems in motivation and structure before going on to the next draft. It is much easier to see such difficulties when the scenes are laid out in sequence on a single sheet of paper. 

Now we shall work from the same source material as before (the myth) but in a very different way, using Daedalus as our main character. We ll answer the seven questions briefly, as a step toward writing a bare-bones synopsis of the projected script, which is for a live-action, realistic film of 15 to 18 minutes, set during the time of the American Civil War. The synopsis is a useful tool, one required by many teachers as a first step in writing any screenplay—a kind of trial balloon. It is also useful for an initial class discussion of a student s work. Widely used in the industry, it is often required in applications for foundation grants, and many writers prefer it to a story outline. 

This story outline and synopsis bear a strong family resemblance to a number of feature films in the escape genre, particularly Robert Bresson s A Man Escapes and Don Siegel s Escape From Alcatraz (said by Siegel, in fact, to have been heavily influenced by A Man Escapes). However, this story is set apart by its setting, the specific moral dilemma faced by the protagonist during the escape, and the ambivalence of the outcome. 

At this point, if you have faithfully done the exercises and assignments laid out in previous chapters, you will have learned, among other things, how to write and revise both character description and location description in format how to use offscreen sound to create mood and evoke offscreen events how to begin to develop a character how to gather and transform material for an adaptation and how to do a story outline for a short screenplay to be written using that material.

A similar logic can be applied to copolymers. The story is a bit more complicated to tell, so we only outline the method. If penultimate effects operate, then the probabilities Ph, Pi2> and so on, defined by Eqs. (7.32)-(7.35) should be replaced by conditional probabilities. As a matter of fact, the kind of conditional probabilities needed must be based on the two preceding events. Thus reactions (7.E) and (7.F) are two of the appropriate reactions, and the corresponding probabilities are Pj n and V i2 - Rather than work out all of the possibilities in detail, we summarize the penultimate model as follows ... 

Collect stories from newspapers or magazines that illustrate one or more of the types of scenarios outlined in the exercise about health and safety.

To illustrate some of the principles outlined above, consider the following story. A jogger leaves a point taken as the origin in Hg. 3 at a constant speed equal to v. His dog. Mo, is at that moment at the point x = a. As the jogger continues in the y direction, Edo runs twice as fast, at a speed 2v, always headed towards his master. The problem is then to find the equation that represents Fido s trajectory and the time at which he meets his master-The answers to these two questions are indicated in Fig. 3. The solution is as follows. 

A very definitive collection of information has been obtained to support the sequence of events just outlined but most striking is the level of confidence and precision in the details. Such was the enthusiasm and imagination regarding the information that during the press conference NASA announced that there was evidence for life on Mars based on data from ALH84001. We will look at some of the details of this extensive and controversial story. 

In the previous section I have described some researches which originated from me wishing to test certain alleged observations and various ideas which seemed questionable, and therefore that work has mainly a reactive character. In the present section I will outline some proactive researches, that is investigations which started with me at Keele and which initiated new lines of enquiry. It so happens that many of the researches of this type were concerned with the polymerisation of dioxacycloalkanes, the properties of oxonium ions, the polarography of carbenium and oxonium ions and various kinds of BIE, and they therefore fall outside the scope of this review but there were enough proactive researches on alkenes to make a story of steadily evolving ideas. 

How the groups unravelled this phenomenon is an interesting detective story but for our purposes it is more convenient to progress directly to the conclusion. In Figure 10.19 we outlined the two modes of insertion that can occur, 1,2 and 2,1 insertion. The latter often leads to isomerisation via P-elimination and re-insertion, which will lower the stereoregularity. Another outcome, especially for catalysts that show little or no P-elimination would be to continue the polymerisation resulting in an error in the chain and hence a lower melting point of the polypropene. 

A classical example is the development of soluble chiral catalysts for homogenous asymmetric hydrogenation. The story began with the discovery of Wilkinson s catalyst [4]. In 1968, Horner [5] and Knowles [6], independently, reported the feasibility of asymmetric hydrogenations in the presence of optically active Wilkinson-type catalyst. Although the optical yields were rather low, further studies in this direction were the basis of the success of Monsanto s asymmetric synthesis of the anti-Parkinson s drug L-DOPA. The key steps of the synthesis are outlined in Scheme 11.1.
