Materials. The zeolites used were X and 2.62 Y. These were compacted in a 13-mm diameter KBr press in the ratio of 3 1 zeolite to emulsion polymer polystyrene by weight. The resulting disk was about 0.35 mm thick. 14C-labeled salicylic acid was supplied by the Radiochemical Center, Amersham. The pigskin used was from the relatively hair-free stomach region of freshly killed pigs, and the human skin was undiseased stomach skin of post-mortem origin. [Pg.308]

Secretory, this type of epithelium is found in the stomach. The mucosa consists of long, closely packed, tubular glands which, depending on the stomach region, secrete mucus, the hormone gastrin and the gastric juices. [Pg.136]

If a flagging cell culture is placed back in its host, cancer may be produced if the cells had mutated otherwise, the cells will function normally. Interestingly, it is noted that if cells from the orbital area of a frog embryo are placed somewhere in the stomach region, these cells will act to produce new gut lining, and not internal eyes. In other words, there is a coordinating system that ensures that all the cells in a given area act or function in the same way. [Pg.359]

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is characterized by the development of a tumor (gastrinoma) or tumors that secrete excessive levels of gastrin, a hormone that stimulates production of acid by the stomach. In most cases, the tumor or tumors arise within the pancreas and/or the upper region of the small intestine (duodenum). [Pg.1483]

If the concepts and facts presented in this paper are correct, a major kind of human cancer in many regions of the world, cancer of the stomach, is due to a type of nitroso compound, a nitrosoureido derivative, even though not a nitrosamine It is quite certain that the formation of such compounds can be blocked by vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as by some other substances such as gallates Thus, the primary prevention of cancer caused by nitroso compounds is readily accomplished through an adequate Intake of such harmless inhibitors with every meal from infancy onwards ... [Pg.314]

Antrectomy Surgical excision of the wall of the antrum, the region of the stomach that produces the hormone gastrin. [Pg.1560]

The tips of villi have the lowest pHm values, whereas the crypt regions have pHm > 8 values [70]. Most remarkable was that an alkaline microclimate (pHm 8) was observed in the human stomach, whose bulk pHfo is generally about 1.7. In the stomach and duodenum, the near-neutral microclimate pH was attributed to the secretion of HCO3 from the epithelium [70]. [Pg.18]

The contents of the tract must also be continually moved along so that it can be acted upon by the sequential regions of the tract. Peristalsis is a muscular contraction that produces a ring of contraction that moves along the length of the tract. This wave-like contraction causes propulsion and forces the contents forward. Peristalsis is more important in the esophagus and stomach. [Pg.282]

Gastrointestinal sphincters are formed where the circular layer of smooth muscle is thickened. Sphincters occur at several points along the tract. Their function is to limit the movement of food materials from one region to another. For example, the pyloric sphincter found between the stomach and duodenum of the small intestine plays an important role in limiting the rate of gastric emptying. Sphincters undergo tonic contractions that may be sustained for minutes or hours. [Pg.282]
