Stockless system

Although stockless systems can be practised on arable farms, by the use of green manures to maintain soil nutrient status, the need for the addition of animals as a source of recycled excreta, and as graziers, has long been recognised. At the time of the golden hoof, field owners paid shepherds for the use of their sheep, if only to have them penned up on a particular field overnight. [Pg.98]

The principal requirement for any growing crop is the balanced and accessible availability of nitrogen. However the standards do accept the possibility of so-called stockless systems, where crops may be grown without the use of animal manures while deriving their nitrogen requirements from other sources. [Pg.87]

Although stockless systems are being explored, most organic farming systems require outdoor livestock as a component of the rotation. Experiments that investigate only one part of the rotation are therefore of limited value. Figures for output per hectare of cereal crops, for example are not easily comparable with those of conventional farming, whether expressed just for the cereal phase or over the whole rotation. [Pg.181]

This tentative number of kanbans is reconsidered monthly because the daily leveled production requirement may differ under the new monthly production schedule. In addition, the number of kanbans is sometimes further reduced by systematically removing them from circulation in the system. The resultant reduction of work-in-process inventory will stress the production system and reveal the weakest point for further improvement. Thus, the kanban system is part of the approach used in JIT to move toward the goal of stockless production and achieve continuous improvement of the production system. [Pg.550]

It is important to understand that JIT is not an inventory reduction system. It is a system that focuses on the elimination of waste in all of its forms. It is sometimes thought of as stockless production, because it uses much less inventory than other systems. But, it still requires inventory. The level of inventory does provide a good measurement of how effectively waste is being eliminated. In this way, inventory is analogous to a thermometer. A thermometer tells the temperature, but it does not create the temperature. The level of inventory in a system tells the observer how effectively waste has been... [Pg.138]

Because of the restrictions on fertiliser and mannre sources several stockless organic farms have now introdnced a livestock system. There are, however, a number of successful stockless farms, which often have started with high levels of soil potassium or have soils with a reasonable clay content. These soils should have sufficient amonnts of potassium mineralised each year for crop production. [Pg.250]
