In total, 185 substances were found in the wing-sac liquid of male S. bilineata from a Costa Rican population. For a more detailed analysis the relative peak area of thirteen focus compounds was compared (Table 14.1). Of these nine were male-specific substances (indole, indol-3-carboxaldehyde, indole-3-carboxylic acid, 2-aminoacetophenon, anthranilic acid, SHJOH-dipyrrolofl -aT -dJpyrazine-5,10-dione (pyrocoll), indolo[2,l-b]quinazoline-6,12-dione (tryptanthrin), 2,6,10-trimethyl-3-oxo-6,10-dodecadienolide, and a compound C15H24O2 of unknown structure), three were fatty acids (tetradecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, and octadecanoic acid), and one a steroid (cholesterol). On average, the cumulative peak area of these substances made up 62.5 20.7% of the whole chromatogram area. [Pg.155]

Although most insects are flexible about their steroid sources, senita flies definitely are not They lack a set of enzymes indispensable for utilizing most steroids, cholesterol included. The enzymes they do have can handle only a few rare natural steroids, and only with these unusual compounds as starting points can they produce their own essential steroids. The single Sonoran source of these rare steroids seems to be senita cactus, and thus senita flies must incorporate the cactus into their diets or perish. As the only Sonoran fruit flies resistant to senita toxins, senita flies experience no competition from their relatives for the one plant that keeps them alive. [Pg.109]

Perhaps the most spectacular of the natural carbocation rearrangements is the concerted sequence of 1,2-methyl and 1,2-hydride Wagner-Meerwein shifts that occurs during the formation oflanosterol from squalene. Lanosterol is then the precursor of the steroid cholesterol in animals. [Pg.219]

By far the most impressive example of electrophilic addition in natural prodnct formation is in the biosynthesis of steroids. The snbstrate sqnalene oxide is cyclized to lanosterol in a process catalysed by a single enzyme. Lanosterol is then converted into the primary animal-steroid cholesterol. Sqnalene oxide comes from sqnalene, which is itself formed throngh a combination of two molecules of farnesyl diphosphate. [Pg.303]

The subsequent conversion of HMG-CoA into MVA involves a two-step reduction of the thioester group to a primary alcohol (see Section 7.11), and provides an essentially irreversible and rate-limiting transformation. Drug-mediated inhibition of this enzyme, HMG-CoA reductase (HMGR), can be used to regulate the biosynthesis of the steroid cholesterol. High levels of blood cholesterol are known to contribute to the incidence of coronary heart disease and heart attacks. [Pg.381]

USGS researchers found that at least one of these chemicals was present in more than 80 percent of the rivers and streams examined. Half of the streams had seven or more of the chemicals, and about a third contained 10 or more. The most common substances encountered were coprostanol (a fecal steroid), cholesterol, N,N-diethyl-toluamide (an insect repellent), caffeine, triclosan (a disinfectant), tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (a fire retardant), and 4-nonylphenol (a product of the degradation of detergents). None of the chemicals found occurred in very high concentrations. For the less common chemicals, concentrations sometimes ranged as low as less than 1... [Pg.96]

V 8% Ethyl ether/petroleum ether Steroids (cholesterol)... [Pg.306]

There are many kinds of steroids. Cholesterol, the waxy, fatty substance found in all body cells, is a sterol, meaning a combination of a lipid and a steroid. It has two main roles First, it is a... [Pg.44]

Numerous examples of the ulitity and selectivity of these sorbents are. given below. Table 2.3 lists nine steroids that were tested for their retentiveness on five different sorbents [31]. The steroid standards at 1 mg/ml were dissolved in methanol-water for the evaluation of a C,8 sorbent. For all the other sorbents, the steroids were dissolved in methylene chloride. At the polarity extremes for these steroids, cholesterol (the least polar) is retained only on C18, whereas hydrocortisone (most polar) is retained on all five of the sorbents tested. [Pg.281]

Then there are the ambiguous natural products such as the steroid cholesterol, which may cause innumerable deaths through heart disease but which is a vital component of cell walls, and the polyketide thromboxane, one drop of which would instantaneously clot all the blood in your body but without which you would bleed to death if you cut yourself. [Pg.1413]

The structure of steroids—cholesterol, female sex hormones, male sex hormones, adrenal cortical steroids, anabolic steroids, and oral contraceptives (Section 29.8)... [Pg.1]

Like all steroids, cholesterol has a structure with four connected rings. [Pg.734]

AY 62022 medrogestone. azacitidine [inn. usan] is a (nucleoside) antibiotic isolated from StreptoverticWium ladakanus and Actinoplanes spp. It is CYTOTOXIC (inhibits pyrimidine biosynthesis) and in ANTICANCER chemotherapy it has been used to treat acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemia. No longer marketed, azacosterol [inn] (azacosterol hydrochloride [usan] DAC IMD 760 SC 12937) is a steroid cholesterol bio thesis inhibitor that has been used as an ANTihyperlipidaemic. It also is an avian chemosterilant. azacosterol hydrochloride azacosterol. Azactam aztreonam. [Pg.43]

The answer is b. (Murray, pp 505-626. Scrivei, pp 5029-5250. Sack, pp 121-138. Wilson, pp 287-320.) Steroid hormones such as aldosterone are ultimate derivatives of cholesterol. The compound illustrated in the question is cholesterol, one of a large group of steroids. Cholesterol, which can be derived from the diet as well as synthesized de novo, is the precursor of all steroids involved in mammalian metabolism. These include the bile acids, the steroid hormones, and vitamin D. Cholesterol cannot be metabolized to carbon dioxide, and water in humans. It must be excreted as a component of bile. Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) is a peptide hormone of the adenohypophysis that influences the secretion of corticosteroid hormones. Prostaglandins are eicosanoid derivatives that are also made up of... [Pg.288]

Multicyclic alkanes are hydrocarbons that have more than one bonded cyclic ring. These abound in biology as all kinds of hormones, steroids, cholesterol, carbohydrates, etc. [Pg.46]

A fused multiple-ring system is the structural framework for steroids. Cholesterol is the nonpolar, nonsaponifiable progenitor of the metabolic and gonadal hormones such as cortisol, testosterone and estrogen as well as the bile acids used for the intestinal absorption of fats and oils. Many toxins fit into this lipid subclass. [Pg.333]
