Steels case studies

The first case study shows how a knowledge of steel microstructures can help us trace the chain of events that led to a damaging engineering failure. 

The press had been designed with a capacity to deliver 280 kN press force and to work at a production rate of 40 lids per minute. Calculations to determine the distribution of forming loads required indicated that the press capacity was adequate to form the family of steel lids to be produced on the machine. One of the major areas of interest in the design was the con-rod and pin (see Figure 4.66). The first option considered was based on a previous design where the con-rod was manufactured from cast iron with phosphor bronze bearings at the big and small ends. However, weaknesses in this approach necessitated the consideration of other options. The case study presents the analysis of the pin and con-rod using simple probabilistic techniques in an attempt to provide in-service reliable press operation. Industry sets limits that bound our degrees of freedom and thus tend to shorten our design case study load. We are all aw are of such limits and this last category is included primarily for completeness. Examples include minimum industrial thickness for carbon steel plate, and maximum baffle cut for shell and tube heat exchangers.

Used to study the composition and -> Volume of Explosion Gases. It consists of a heavy steel case sealed by a screw cap. The construction withstands the dynamic shock of a detonating explosive sample. The gas developed can be vented by a valve in the screw cap for measurement of volume and for gas analysis.

The relatively complex procedure that may be required and the associated safety considerations for chemical cleaning of heat exchangers is illustrated by a case study published by French [1981]. The deposit on the surfaces of a stainless steel heat exchanger had the aproximate composition given in Table 15.12.

Tang et al. (2013) studied the recycling of NiMH household batteries. The main parts of a NiMH battery are the cathode, the anode, the electrolyte, a separator, and the steel case. REEs are found in the anode, which consists of a hydrogen storage alloy based on misch metal and nickel alloys. The misch metal contains mainly cerium, lanthanum, praseodymium and neodymium.
