Steam filter

Norite, is heated to boiling by introduction of steam, filtered through a Norite filter pad by suction, and cooled in an ice-salt bath. The muconic acid is precipitated by the addition of a large excess (1500 ml.) (sp. gr. 1.18) of concentrated hydrochloric acid to the cold solution. The acid is added in a thin stream to the well-stirred solution. After 2 hours the muconic acid is filtered, washed first with two 400-ml. portions of cold water and then with 200 ml. of methyl alcohol, and dried at 85°. The yield of nearly colorless product melting at 296-298°, with decomposition, amounts to 165-195 g. (37-43%). [Pg.59]

Prepare a mixture of 30 ml, of aniline, 8 g. of o-chloro-benzoic acid, 8 g. of anhydrous potassium carbonate and 0 4 g. of copper oxide in a 500 ml. round-bottomed flask fitted with an air-condenser, and then boil the mixture under reflux for 1 5 hours the mixture tends to foam during the earlier part of the heating owing to the evolution of carbon dioxide, and hence the large flask is used. When the heating has been completed, fit the flask with a steam-distillation head, and stcam-distil the crude product until all the excess of aniline has been removed. The residual solution now contains the potassium. V-phenylanthrani-late add ca. 2 g. of animal charcoal to this solution, boil for about 5 minutes, and filter hot. Add dilute hydrochloric acid (1 1 by volume) to the filtrate until no further precipitation occurs, and then cool in ice-water with stirring. Filter otT the. V-phcnylanthranilic acid at the pump, wash with water, drain and dry. Yield, 9-9 5 g. I he acid may be recrystallised from aqueous ethanol, or methylated spirit, with addition of charcoal if necessary, and is obtained as colourless crystals, m.p. 185-186°. [Pg.217]

Fit securely to the lower end of the condenser (as a receiver) a Buchner flask, the side-tube carrying a piece of rubber tubing which falls well below the level of the bench. Steam-distil the ethereal mixture for about 30 minutes discard the distillate, which contains the ether, possibly a trace of unchanged ethyl benzoate, and also any biphenyl, CeHs CgHs, which has been formed. The residue in the flask contains the triphenyl carbinol, which solidifies when the liquid is cooled. Filter this residual product at the pump, wash the triphenyl-carbinol thoroughly with water, drain, and then dry by pressing between several layers of thick drying-paper. Steam-distil the ethereal solution and discard the distillate. The residue in the flask is triphenyl-carbinol and solidifies on cooling. Filter at the pump, wash with water, drain and dry. The mixed bases are boiled with an acetic acid-acetic anhydride mixture to convert the aniline into acetanilide. The product is poured into water, when the acetanilide crystallises out while the quinoline remains in solution as quinoline acetate. The mixed amines are dissolved in hydrochloric acid and zinc chloride solution added. The quinoline chlorozincate, (C H7N)2,HtZnCl, crystallises out, being almost insoluble in water, while the aniline chlorozincate remains in solution. Place a mixture of 53 g. of A.R. lactic acid (85-88 per cent, acid), 75 g. (85-5 ml.) of commercial anhydrous isopropyl alcohol, 300 ml. of benzene and 20 g. of Zeo-Karb 225/H (1) in a 700 ml. bolt-head flask, equipped with an automatic water separator (e.g., a large modified Dean and Stark apparatus with a stopcock at the lower end, see Fig. Ill, 126, 1) carrying an efficient reflux condenser at its upper end, and a mercury-sealed stirrer (alternatively, the hquid-sealed stirrer shown in Fig. 11,7,11, c. may be used). Reflux the mixture, with stirring, on a steam bath for 5 hours or until water no longer collects in appreciable amount in the water separator run off the water from time to time. Filter off the resin at the pump and wash it with two 25 ml. portions of benzene. Shake the combined filtrate and washings with about 5 g. of precipit-ated calcium... [Pg.387]

Succinamide. Add 5 g. (4-8 ml.) of dimethyl succinate to 25 ml. of concentrated ammonia solution (sp. gr. 0-88) in a 100 ml. conical flask. Cork the flask and shake the contents for a few minutes aUow to stand for 24 hours with occasional shaking. Filter off the crystals of succinamide, and wash with a Uttle cold water. RecrystaUise from a little hot water. Dry in the steam oven and determine the m.p. The yield is 3-5 g. Pure succinamide melts at 254° with decomposition. [Pg.403]

Place 425 ml. of concentrated ammonia solution (sp. gr. 0-88) in a 500 ml. round-bottomed flask and add slowly 75 g. of a-bromocaproic acid (Section 111,126). Stopper the flask tightly and allow it to stand in a warm place (50-55°) for 30 hours. Filter the amino acid at the pump and keep the filtrate A) separately. Wash the amino acid (ca. 26 g.) well with methyl alcohol to remove the ammonium bromide present. Evaporate the aqueous filtrate (A) almost to dryness on a steam bath. [Pg.432]

Method 1. Arrange the flask containing the reaction mixture for steam distillation as in Fig. II, 40, 1. Proceed with the steam distillation until crystals of p-dibromobenzene appear in the condenser. Change the receiver and continue with the distillation until all the p-dibromobenzeiie has passed over from time to time run out the water from the condenser so that the crystals melt and run down into the receiver. Reject the residue in the flask. Transfer the first distillate to a separatory funnel, wash it with a httle water, and dry the lower layer with a little anhydrous magnesium sulphate or anhydrous calcium chloride filter. Distil slowly from a small distilling flask use a wire gauze or an air bath (Fig. II, 5, 3). Collect the fraction which passes over at 150-170° pour the residue (R), while it is still hot, into a small beaker or porcelain basin for the isolation of p-dibromobenzene. Redistil the fraction of b.p. 150-170° and collect the bromobenzene at 154-157° (3). The yield is 60 g. [Pg.536]
