Universe steady state

Fifty years later, the general evolutionary picture of nucleosynthesis and the observational evidence has greatly changed. The Big Bang inflationary Universe has replaced the steady state Universe. Basic concepts of stellar nucleosynthesis have been confirmed and developed. The metal abundance of the oldest stars has been extended from about one-twentieth of the concentration in the Sun to about 10-5 that of the Sun. Yet, the origins of the first stars and the first metals remain questions for a subsequent settlement . [Pg.110]

The cosmological projective equations have never been solved directly, but Godel s solution hts the projective topology closely enough to serve as a model of the implied steady-state universe. [Pg.240]

And yet it doesn t always work. Stories, like music, take time. The universe was not built in a day, and stories about the universe must be edited significantly to fit into human brains via human language. If a crucial part fails, the story may turn out to be wrong. The detritus of failed scientific stories can be communicated with just a few words phlogiston, ether, the steady-state universe, cold fusion. [Pg.264]

The overall system that we will analyze comprises the unbleached Kraft pulp line, chemicals and energy recovery zones of a specific paper mill (Melville and Williams, 1977). We will employ a somewhat simplified but still realistic representation of the plant, originally developed in a series of research projects at Purdue University (Adler and Goodson, 1972 Foster et al., 1973 Melville and Williams, 1977). The records of simulated operation data, used to support the application of our learning architecture, were generated by a reimplementation, with only minor changes, of steady-state models (for each individual module and the system as a... [Pg.147]

A known quantity of sample is added to a known volume of a universal buffer solution of sufficient capacity and of known pH. The amount of sample must be sufficient to cause precipitation to occur in the formed saturated solution. After waiting for a period of time to allow the saturated solution to reach the desired steady state, the solution is filtered to remove the solid and obtain a clear solution, whose spectrum is then taken by the UV spectrophotometer. Mathematical treatment of the spectral data yields the area-under-the-curve of the filtered sample solution, AUQ. [Pg.107]

Many general laws of the physical universe are expressible by differential equations. Specific phenomena are then singled out from the infinity of solutions of these equations by assigning the individual initial or boundary conditions which characterize the given problem. For steady state or boundary-value problems (Fig. 3-1) the solution must... [Pg.3]

An equation analogous to (28) can also be written for the ratio n / ° in a depletion region. It would be conceivable for all three charge states, H+, H°, and H , to exist together in a depletion region, with steady-state concentrations having universal ratios dependent only on the four carrier emission rates. As we shall see in Section 4a in III, however, experiments suggest that H+ and H° have the major roles, with n+ a fraction of n0. The... [Pg.259]

An alternative to derivatizing carbohydrates is the use of indirect photometric detection. In this method, a detectable co-ion in the electrolyte is added to the buffer system generating a steady state absorbance signal in the detector. As the analyte ions migrate in front of the detector window, they displace the detectable co-ion and cause a decrease or negative response in the detector signal. This method provides universal detection of all anions or cations. Since most carbohydrates are not ionized... [Pg.51]
