Taking quality assurance in a wide sense, it is necessary to consider specifications, the relevance of test methods, the accuracy of test methods and the statistically based control schemes which make up the discipline of the quality engineer. A cohort of 748 white male workers occupationally exposed to benzene for varying time periods between 1940 and 1949 in 2 manufacturing facilities producing rubber hydrochloride (Pliofilm ) has been studied (Infante 1978 Infante et al. 1977). Before the challenges that face the industry can be reasonably discussed, the industry itself must be defined. Specific statistics that give adequate comparisons on sales, pounds, and total value of synthetic organic chemicals sold are not easy to determine, and it becomes necessary to define the industry by a process of elimination.
