The Rockwell method is based on measurement of two-stage penetration of a diamond cone or steel ball into a flat, well polished surface of the material under test (Fig. 4.3.9a). The cone has an included angle of 120° and a radius of curvature of 0.2 mm. The initial static load P0 penetrates the cone to a depth which depends on the hardness of the material—thus the zero position is fixed. Next, the main load is applied and the cone moves further down by a value ht. On removal of the main load, the ma-... [Pg.36]

A commercially available 5% Pt/Al203 catalyst (Engelhard Industries 4759) was used in this study. The catalyst sample had a mean particle size of 55 pm as measured by light scattering, a BET surface area of 140 m2/g, a mean pore radius of 50 A and a density of 5.0 g/ml. The platinum loading was 4.65%, and the platinum dispersion was 0.28 as measured by static CO titration (ref. 11). [Pg.178]

Figure 6. Static friction force versus normal load L for different tip geometries. In all cases, the radius of curvature was Rc = 70 A and contacts were nonadhesive. Straight lines are fits according to oc with the results P = 0.91 0.005 (commensurate) and p = 0.63 0.01 (amorphous). [With permission from Ref. 74. Europhys. Lett. 54, 663 (2001) additional data provided by L. Wenning (open diamonds).]... Figure 6. Static friction force versus normal load L for different tip geometries. The static range can be examined fixing the spheres A and B, and charging the sphere C by a radial vertical load N and by a radial horizontal load T parallel to z axis. The system is plane, and the C point is obliged on two circular lines, whose radius in R, and centers are B if > 0, A if j/> 0 we have a one freedom s degree system, but the line on which C is obliged... [Pg.357]

Figs. 8 and 9 show the measured static film pressure against bearing radius for supply pressures of 3,4,5 and 6 bar gauge with fixed loads of 125 and 312 N respectively. These results are consistent with expectations from the points of view of supply pressure, load and radius. It is Intended that these results will provide future checks with theory. If the pressure curves are extrapolated towards the centre of the bearing it is apparent that the ratio of the absolute film pressure to supply pressure across the restrictor is greater than the critical ratio, so the bearing restrictor la unchoked. [Pg.534]

The pins used were 20mm in length, 6mm in diameter and the ends of the pins were machined to a 20mm radius of curvature. The rectangular plate measured 17 x 6 x 3mm. The test parameters are shown in Table 2. A bi-directional load cell measures the friction force on the static pin during the course of the experiment. The friction force was recorded every half-hour for 3 cycles. [Pg.751]
