On the state farms, monitoring of 90Sr in milk has continued to the present time. The activity has decayed with a half-life of 10 a, due to the combined effects of radioactive decay, movement down the soil profile and reduced availability of 90Sr to uptake by plants. In cases where yields were high among state farms and show projects, they were typically achieved with such costly inputs of machinery, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides that the results were economically irrational. 

In theory, at least, the most advanced were the state farms—the proletarian, industrial, collective farms in which workers were paid wages and no private plots were allowed.
