Standing wave systems

Of course, according to the Section ELD, this calculation should really be carried out at wavelengths X — s instead of traveling times T—s. The Sagnac-type experiments are also standing-wave systems. Then the magnitude of shift of the interference fringes with the above oo... [Pg.397]

In order to study the mechanism by which a cavitation bubble may stimulate ice crystallization, a standing wave system was used to levitate a single bubble in a fixed location within pure water. It was found that the nucleation of ice could only be stimulated at a higher nucleation temperature in the presence of the oscillating cavitation bubble (Chow et al., 2004). [Pg.616]

These results were in contrast to the previous experiments described above, where nucleation was always observed. It is thought that as nucleation is a stochastic process, a single oscillation of a laser-induced bubble may not always lead to the nucleation. The probability of nucleation is increased by the continuously oscillating bubble produced by the standing wave system, and it is increased further by the multicavitation events produced by the ultrasonic horn. [Pg.619]

ASTM E1050-90 also makes use of a tube with a test specimen at one end and a loudspeaker at the other end, but iastead of a single movable microphone there are two microphones at fixed locations ia the tube. The signals from these microphones are processed by a digital frequency analysis system which calculates the standing wave pattern and the normal iacidence sound-absorption coefficients. [Pg.312]

Another problem, prevalent ia areas where severe icing conditions are met, is referred to as galloping of power lines. When ice forms on a power line, there is frequently a prevailing wiad which causes the ice to take a teardrop or airfoil shape. This foil provides an aerodynamic lift to the conductors and under certain conditions the conductors can go iato a resonant vibration such that large standing waves are created that exert enormous forces on the system. Miles of power lines and the towers along them have been destroyed by this phenomenon. [Pg.465]

The maximum pressure from an explosion of a hydrocarbon and air is 7 x initial pressure, unless it occurs in a long pipe where a standing wave can be set up. It may be cheaper to design some small vessels to withstand an explosion than to provide a safety relief system. It is typical to specify %" as minimum plate thickness (for carbon steel only). [Pg.18]

The construction of a TXRF system, including X-ray source, energy-dispersive detector and pulse-processing electronics, is similar to that of conventional XRF. The geometrical arrangement must also enable total reflection of a monochromatic primary beam. The totally reflected beam interferes with the incident primary beam. This interference causes the formation of standing waves above the surface of a homogeneous sample, as depicted in Fig. 4.1, or within a multiple-layered sample. Part of the primary beam fades away in an evanescent wave field in the bulk or substrate [4.28],... [Pg.184]

The sonochemical reduction of Au(III) has been investigated under Ar in the presence of 20 mM 1-propanol at different frequencies, where two types of ultrasound irradiation systems were used one is a horn type sonicator (Branson 450-D, frequency 20 kHz, diameter of Ti tip 19 mm) and the other is a standing wave sonication system with a series of transducers operating at different ultrasound frequencies (L-3 Communication ELAK Nautik GmbH, frequency 213, 358, 647, and 1,062 kHz, diameter of oscillator 55mm) [33]. All experiments were performed at a constant ultrasound intensity ((0.1+/—0.01 W mL-1), which was determined by calorimetry. [Pg.140]

The experimental system for measuring the sonoluminescence spectrum of alkali-metal atom emission from an aqueous solution is similar to that for measuring the MBSL spectrum from water. Degassing the solution is an important procedure because the presence of dissolved air affects the emission intensity. In an air-saturated solution, no observation of alkali-metal atom emission has been reported, whereas continuum emission can be observed. A typical experimental apparatus using ultrasonic standing waves is shown in Fig. 13.3 [8]. The cylindrical sample container is made of stainless steel, and its size is 46 mm in diameter and 150 mm in... [Pg.339]

Two component, positive photoresists (see Section 3.5.b) represent systems with unusual exposure characteristics caused by the standing wave effect (see Section 2.1.f) and "bleaching" or change in optical density during exposure (see Sections 3.5 and 3.9). Both of these phenomena result in nonlinear exposure throughout the thickness of the resist film, and result in uneven developing rates as a function of film thickness, making evaluation of these systems difficult. [Pg.201]
