Introduction Review and audit processes are used in the chemical process industry to evaluate, examine, and verify the design of process equipment, operating procedures, and management systems. These processes assure compliance with company standards and guidelines as well as government regulations. Reviews and audits can encompass the areas of process and personnel safety, environmental and industrial hygiene protection, quality assurance, maintenance procedures, and so on. 

Currently, there is no mechanism to effectively share reactive chemical test data throughout industry. The feasibility of a publicly available test database has not yet been studied by industry or government. Reactive chemical experts at one company visited by CSB expressed an interest in working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop such a database. 

The term system or quality system is used with surprising inconsistency throughout the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry and by government regulators. Even within a single company or within a department, the terms can be nebulous in their use and interpretation. System is often used to describe an individual process or unit operation. Often, the term system is used so narrowly as to describe an individual policy, standard, or even a single procedure. 

The preparation of standards is carried out by the technical committees, their sub-committees and panels. Hence, we have, for example, PRJ/66 Hose and PRI 70 Elastomeric seals, and there is a coordination committee for input into ISO. Committee members are nominated by industry, government departments and research associations. The industry representatives are usually nominated by trade associations and not by the individual company, although individual experts can be co-opted. BSI supplies secretarial support, the level of which depends on how active the committee is and how important its work is considered.
