Sphalerite

C, b.p. 907"C, d 713. Transition element occurring as zinc blende, sphalerite (Zn,Fe)S calamine or smithsonite (ZnCO j), willemite (Zo2Si04), franklinite (ZnFe204). Extracted by roasting to ZnO and reduction with carbon. The metal is bluish-white (deformed hep) fairly hard and brittle. Burns... [Pg.432]

Sulfur occurs native in the vicinity of volcanos and hot springs. It is widely distributed in nature as iron pyrites, galena, sphalerite, cinnabar, stibnite, gypsum, epsom salts, celestite, barite, etc. [Pg.38]

The principal ores of zinc are sphalerite (sulfide), smithsonite (carbonate), calamine (silicate), and franklinite (zine, manganese, iron oxide). One method of zinc extraction involves roasting its ores to form the oxide and reducing the oxide with coal or carbon, with subsequent distillation of the metal. [Pg.53]

Gallium is often found as a trace element in diaspore, sphalerite, germanite, bauxite, and coal. Some flue dusts from burning coal have been shown to contain as much 1.5 percent gallium. [Pg.87]

Activators enhance the adsorption of collectors, eg, Ca " in the fatty acid flotation of siUcates at high pH or Cu " in the flotation of sphalerite, ZnS, by sulfohydryl collectors. Depressants, on the other hand, have the opposite effect they hinder the flotation of certain minerals, thus improving selectivity. For example, high pH as well as high sulfide ion concentrations can hinder the flotation of sulfide minerals such as galena (PbS) in the presence of xanthates (ROCSS ). Hence, for a given fixed collector concentration there is a fixed critical pH that defines the transition between flotation and no flotation. This is the basis of the Barsky relationship which can be expressed as [X ]j[OH ] = constant, where [A ] is the xanthate ion concentration in the pulp and [Oi/ ] is the hydroxyl ion concentration indicated by the pH. Similar relationships can be written for sulfide ion, cyanide, or thiocyanate, which act as typical depressants in sulfide flotation systems. [Pg.49]

Alaska, Washington, and Nevada. Ores of the Southeast Missouri lead belt and extensive deposits such as in Silesia and Morocco are of the replacement type. These deposits formed when an aqueous solution of the minerals, under the influence of changing temperature and pressure, deposited the sulfides in susceptible sedimentary rock, usually limestone and dolomites. These ore bodies usually contain galena, sphalerite, and pyrite minerals, but seldom contain gold, silver, copper, antimony, or bismuth. [Pg.32]

Depressants are reagents that selectively prevent the reaction between a coUector and a mineral, thus preventing its flotation. For example, sodium cyanide [143-33-9] depresses sphalerite [12169-28-7] (zinc sulfide) and pyrite [1309-36-0] (iron sulfide) but not galena. It thus enhances selective flotation of the galena. [Pg.34]

Activators promote the reaction of the coUector with some minerals. For example, ordinarily xanthates do not bind to sphalerite, but pretreatment of the sphalerite using copper sulfate enables it to adsorb the xanthate. Thus it is possible to float the sphalerite from lead—zinc ores after the galena has been recovered. [Pg.34]

Some of the most important metal sulfides are pyrite [1309-36-0] EeS2 chalcopyrite [1308-56-1J, CuEeS2 pyrrhotite [1310-50-5] Ee sphalerite [12169-28-7] ZnS galena [12179-39-4] PbS arsenopyrite [1303-18-0] 2 pentlandite [53809-86-2] (Fe,Ni)2Sg. Sulfide deposits often occur in... [Pg.119]

Zinc ores are widely distributed throughout the world 55 zinc minerals are known (8—10). However, only those Hsted in Table 1 are of commercial importance. Of these, sphalerite provides ca 90% of the zinc produced today. Sulfide ores usually occur in the range of 2—12% zinc (average ca 4%) as mined. [Pg.396]

Zinc ores are generally floated at the mine (18). In the case of simple zinc sulfide ores, flotation is carried out by treatment with copper sulfate to activate the sphalerite causing it to be wet by the organic collector (eg, xanthate). The now-hydrophobic zinc ore particles attach themselves to the rising bubbles. Oxidized ore particles present must be sulftdized with sodium sulfide to be floated (19). Flotation produces concentrates which are ca 50—60% zinc. In mixed ore, the lead and copper are usually floated after depressing the sphalerite with cyanide or zinc sulfate. The sphalerite is then activated and floated. [Pg.399]

Cadmium Sulfide. CdS [1306-23-6] is dimorphic and exists ia the sphalerite (cubic) and wurtzite (hexagonal) crystal stmctures (40). At very high pressures it may exist also as a rock-salt stmcture type. It is oxidized to the sulfate, basic sulfate, and eventually the oxide on heating ia air to 700°C, especially ia the preseace of moisture (9). [Pg.395]

Aetivators. These are used to make a mineral surface amenable to collector coating. Copper ion is used, for example, to activate sphalerite (ZnS), rendering the sphalerite surface capable of absorbing a xanthate or dithiophosphate collector. Sodium sulfide is used to coat oxidized copper and lead minerals so that they can be floated by a sulfide mineral collector. [Pg.1809]

Zinc occurs most abundantly in tire mineral. Sphalerite, ZnS, which is roasted to produce the oxide before the metal production stage. The products of the roast are then reduced by carbon to yield zinc oxide and CO(g). In the older process, tire Belgian retort process, the metal oxide and carbon are mixed together in a reactor which allows the indirect heating of the charge to produce the gaseous products followed by tire condensation of zinc at a lower temperature in a zone of the reactor which is outside the heating chamber. The carbon monoxide is allowed to escape from the vessel and is immediately burnt in... [Pg.330]

Zinc Zinc is processed very similarly to copper and lead. The zinc is bound in the ore as ZnS, sphalerite. Zinc is also obtained as an impurity from lead smelting, in which it is recovered from the blast furnace slag. [Pg.504]
