Natural Ethoxylated Fats, Oils, and Waxes. Castor oil (qv) is a triglyceride high in ticinoleic esters. Ethoxylation in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to a polyoxyethylene content of 60—70 wt % yields water-soluble surfactants (Table 20). Because alkaline catalysts also effect transestenfication, ethoxylated castor oil surfactants are complex mixtures with components resulting from transesterrfication and subsequent ethoxylation at the available hydroxyl groups. The ethoxylates are pale amber Hquids of specific gravity just above 1.0 at room temperature. They are hydrophilic emulsifiers, dispersants, lubricants, and solubilizers used as textile additives and finishing agents, as well as in paper (qv) and leather (qv) manufacture. [Pg.251]

Beeswax, White, occurs as a yellow-white solid, somewhat translucent in thin layers, with a faint, characteristic odor, free from rancidity. It is the bleached, purified wax from the honeycomb of the bee Apis mellifera L. (Fam. Apidae), and it consists primarily of myricyl palmitate (myricin), cerotic acid and ester, and some high-carbon paraffins. Its specific gravity is about 0.95. Beeswax, White, is insoluble in water and sparingly soluble in cold alcohol. Boiling alcohol dissolves cerotic acid and part of the myricin. It is completely soluble in chloroform, in ether, and in fixed and volatile oils. Candelilla Wax occurs as a hard, yellow-brown, opaque to translucent wax. It is a purified wax obtained from the leaves of the candelilla plant, Euphorbia antisyphilitica (Fam. Eu-phorbiaceae). Its specific gravity is about 0.983. It is soluble in chloroform and in toluene, but insoluble in water. [Pg.85]

Scum. It consists of the floatable materials skimmed from the surface of primary and secondary settling tanks. Scum may contain grease, oils, fats, waxes, soaps, hair, paper, cotton, and plastic materials that have specific gravity less than 1. [Pg.288]

The color of the wax will affect the color of the finished product. A Lovibond Tintometer is often used for color measurements, whereby the color of the raw material is compared against a series of colored standard glasses, under a standard light source. The color of the solidified wax of the same sample may be different depending on the amount of occluded air, the rate of cooling, or surface finish. Therefore, the color of many waxes is best measured in the molten state. Two ASTM color standards are used to measure dark-brown to off-white color and off-white to pure white.
