Special Procedures and Programs

Safety Rules—Safety professionals are often called upon to develop and draft written safety policies, procedures, and programs to ensure the safety of their employees. Safety professionals should pay special attention to the development and drafting of these written documents so as not to inadvertently discriminate against any of the protected classes. For example, if the company employs a process or chemical that can cause birth defects in unborn children, if the safety professional prohibits women who may be pregnant from working near the process or chemical to protect the women and unborn child, could this prohibition be considered discriminatory ... [Pg.71]

The essential differences between sequential-modular and equation-oriented simulators are ia the stmcture of the computer programs (5) and ia the computer time that is required ia getting the solution to a problem. In sequential-modular simulators, at the top level, the executive program accepts iaput data, determines the dow-sheet topology, and derives and controls the calculation sequence for the unit operations ia the dow sheet. The executive then passes control to the unit operations level for the execution of each module. Here, specialized procedures for the unit operations Hbrary calculate mass and energy balances for a particular unit. FiaaHy, the executive and the unit operations level make frequent calls to the physical properties Hbrary level for the routine tasks, enthalpy calculations, and calculations of phase equiHbria and other stream properties. The bottom layer is usually transparent to the user, although it may take 60 to 80% of the calculation efforts. [Pg.74]

Not all existing procedures or program elements of the overall health and safety program need to be incorporated into the HASP. For example, if noise is a hazard, the plan does not have to cite the entire hearing conservation program. Procedures already established elsewhere may be referenced, as applicable. In another example, if a confined-space-entry procedure is required, the HASP could reference the particular procedure which is part of the overall program. The next step would be to identify confined spaces at the worksite where the procedure applies, and then provide appropriate implementation procedures (e.g., conditions to be monitored, evaluation of the space, issuance of an entry permit). If special operational procedures apply to the worksite, they can be attached to the HASP using an appendix. [Pg.58]

The undecidability results do not say that a task is always impossible - just that no program can be written to perform the task properly in all cases. But programs could be written to handle special cases. Thus we cannot completely mechanize the verification procedure so it will succeed eventually whenever it should succeed. We can of course verify particular programs and we can improve the verification procedure and increase the set of cases where it will work. As a practical matter, complexity questions will probably swamp one first - classes of programs for which verification is possible but it simply takes too long. [Pg.212]

Prevention of abrupt discontinuation of intrathecal baclofen requires careful attention to programming and monitoring of the infusion system, refill scheduling and procedures, and pump alarms. Advise patients and caregivers of the importance of keeping scheduled refill visits and educate them on the early symptoms of baclofen withdrawal. Give special attention to patients at apparent risk (eg, spinal cord injuries at T-6 or above, communication difficulties, history of withdrawal symptoms from oral or intrathecal baclofen). Consult the technical manual of the implantable infusion system for additional postimplant clinician and patient information (see Warnings). [Pg.1279]

Procedures and activities associated with the collection of metrics are best integrated into the normal work of the personnel collecting the data. Any special procedures that are viewed as extra or unrelated work may not be endorsed by personnel charged with the data collection. If an individual is focused solely on the metrics program, data collection and analysis tasks are defined as part of his or her job. However, much of the data will be collected by personnel whose major responsibilities are not directly associated with the metrics system. [Pg.85]

Dispersancy Solution copolymers are comparatively easy to produce in dispersant form as copolymerization with an appropriate polar monomer is relatively straightforward. If the polar monomer is also a methacrylate, reactivity ratios are essentially the same and no special procedures are required to produce random copolymers. Commercial examples have included dimethyl (or diethyl)aminoethyl methacrylate [11], hydroxyethyl methacrylate [12] and dimethylamino-ethyl methacrylamide [13]. 2-Methyl-5-vinyl pyridine [14] has also been used commercially, reactivity ratios are such that it copolymerizes slightly faster than alkyl methacrylates. Although composition drift is not severe, it should be added in a programmed fashion if a uniform distribution is desired. V-vinyl pyrrolidinone, in contrast, copolymerizes very sluggishly with methacrylates and is best incorporated via a graft reaction [15], sometimes also grafted in combination with V-vinyl imidazole [16]. Since solution chemistry is used to produce dispersant polymethacrylates, like preparation of the base polymer, only relatively simple process modifications are necessary to produce dispersants commercially. [Pg.157]

This requirement does not fix the Dirac matrices uniquely, and thus the whole Dirac theory and all systematic approximations to it could equally well be formulated in terms of general four-dimensional quaternions, which are independent of a special representation and rely only on the algebraic properties of the Clifford algebra [8-10]. Such an implementation of the Dirac theory is known to speed up diagonalisation procedures significantly, and has successfully been employed in modem four-component relativistic program packages like Dirac... [Pg.624]
