Presenting is also advantageous to the audience. Well-planned transparencies or PowerPoint slides provide a second channel of information, augmenting the primary source—the speaker s voice. An audience member who misses a point from one source can often pick it up from the other. Moreover, in this video age it is not irrelevant that a transparency presentation is a visually engaging activity. An audience raised on television expects to have its visual field filled. A communicator who misses or misunderstands such an important audience expectation is simply asking for trouble. 

One of the primary advantages of presenting over giving a traditional speech is the relative ease of delivery. Presenting lets you work widi transparencies or a laptop, either of which lets you examine a full set of notes in disguise moreover, the setting is less fonnal and is thus emotionally less demanding on the speaker. Nonetheless, the ability to deliver a presentation effectively is not an inborn trait, and here we consider some key aspects of presentation delivery. 

Make the visual aids look professional. A sloppy visual aid reflects poorly on a speaker. Small steps such as including titles, occasionally including borders, and using onlv two or three typefaces on transparencies can make a difference. 

An overhead projector permits the speaker to look down at a transparency, point to parts of it, and add to it while still facing the audience. Also, a speaker can easily file transparencies for repeated use. 

Using a computer projection panel combined with an overhead projector eliminates the need to create transparencies or worry about picking up the wrong one while speaking. A press of a button on the computer mouse can kev the appropriate image during a presentation. A speaker can commit an entire visual presentation to a computer disk and revise it for later presentations. 

If you need to use a complex visual aid, build from a simpler one. The first page of a flip chart could include a simple chart, the second page could include a more detailed version of the same chart, and so on. Some speakers show a transparency with parts left out and then add the parts while speaking or else add additional transparencies as overlays. 

The brothers Jacques and Pierre Curie are credited with the discovery of piezoelectricity in a number of hemiedric crystals (Curie and Curie, 1880). Today, piezoelectrics are utiUzed in acousto-electronic devices and sensors based on bulk and surface acoustic waves, piezomechanical sensors to monitor pressure, power, and acceleration, as actuators for micropositioning devices, band pass filters with low insertion losses, as electro-optic devices for optical memories, displays for high-definition televisions, and possibly as transparent piezoelectric speaker membranes as well as miniaturized piezoelectric transformers and motors. As the classic piezoelectric material is a-quartz, the basic relationships are detailed below using it as a model structure. Further details on the piezoelectric properties of quartz, and of its history, discovery and utilization, are available elsewhere (Ballato, 2009). 

Although high in cost, it is often used in areas where transparency is needed— in combination with thermal and chemical demands—such as autoclavable medical and laboratory equipment, microwave components, and cookware. Other plications include sonar covers, speaker cones, ultrasonic transducer heads, and lightweight structural parts. It is also FDA compliant for use in food processing machinery (Figure 4.22).
