Lack of a proper classification system creates problems in trade, tracking and particularly in measuring trade volumes and tariff analysis. Given this problem, the Natural Futures of lUCN has begun to address this issue and attempted to classify a few Southern African natural products under HS coding system. Accordingly, they have analyzed the end uses of Marala, Ximenia,... [Pg.20]

A large rtumber of irtdigenous Southern African plants have, over the ages, been used for nutrition and medicine (Ham et al., 2008). Traditionally, some of these plants have been collected from the wild or obtained in crude form from traditional healers for home consumption and as a result have not been commercialized. Commercialization and value addition of indigenous plants have been mooted as a possible solution to the alleviation of poverty in resource poor communities (Jordaan et al., 2008). Such initiatives would provide income-generating opportunities for these com-mimities as well as serve as an incentive to value and conserve natural resources more. [Pg.223]

BIOACTIVE NATURAL PRODUCTS FROM SOUTHERN AFRICAN MARINE INVERTEBRATES ... [Pg.61]

ABSTRACT The coastline of southern Africa is divided into three bio-geographical zones, with each zone sustaining a unique diversity of marine fauna and flora. Associated with this marine biodiversity are relatively high levels of species endemism, often a useful pre-requisite for the discovery of novel, bioactive marine natural products. This review is the first comprehensive presentation of the structures of 143 marine natural products isolated over the last two decades from 30 species representing five phyla of southern African inter-tidal and sub-tidal marine invertebrates. [Pg.61]
