Source storage

Work on EXAFS then progressed very little until the advent of the synchrotron radiation source (storage ring), described in Section 8.1.1.1. This type of source produces X-ray radiation of the order of 10 to 10 times as intense as that of a conventional source and is continuously tunable. These properties led to the establishment of EXAFS as an important structural tool for solid materials. 

Radiation monitors are continually employed to detect any radiation leakage during operation or source storage, and to confirm a return to satisfactory background levels within the sterilization chamber following operation. The dose delivered is dependent upon source strength and exposure period, with dwell times typically up to 20 hours duration.

The procedure for neutron measurements involved placing the detector near a neutron source storage drum. Measurements were made with a 3 Ci AmBe neutron source and a 3 mCi Cf spontaneous fission neutron source housed in 55-gallon drums. The drum contained a thick neutron moderator/absorber shield, and, thus, it was assumed that thermal neutrons predominated in the energy distribution outside the drum. The detector and PMT were shielded from fission gamma radiation by 5-cm thick lead bricks, and an additional 3-cm thick, high-density polyethylene moderator was interposed between the bricks and the source drum. Pulse-height spectra were accumulated over 1.5 x 10 s for each sample. 

Cylinders should be assigned a definite area for storage. The area should be dry, cool, well ventilated, fire resistant, and away from ignition sources. Keep cylinders protected from excessive temperature rise by storing them away from radiators or other heat sources. Storage conditions should comply with local and state regulations.
