As a start to a tetralogy on dendrimers, the volumes Dendrimers and Den-drimers II have already appeared in print. This mini-series continues now with the latest volume Dendrimers III and will be completed by the fourth volume Dendrimers IV within the next few months. Volume III offers dendrimers based on novel design concepts leading to highly stiffened and shape persistent dendritic structures as well as to new families of rather soft and floppy dendrimers and focuses on new functional properties and materials aspects. As an example, the question of host-guest interactions with dendrimers, whose existence has been under intense debate for a long time, finds its final - and positive - answer in this volume. As a consequence, dendrimers clearly represent a subset of supramolecular chemistry.

Reviews addressing specifically poled polymers for frequency doubling of a laser diode have been published emphasizing the different material aspects and potential phase matching techniques [9]. The best materials available at that time were also reviewed. There has also been a more general, recent review specifically concerned with the work performed in Japan and addressing the question of materials and phase-matching techniques [10]. 

To make this vision a reality, the machines that do man s bidding and thus become the basis of the material aspects of civilization must be able to function without decay over years in the terrestrial atmosphere. Materials, mainly metals, used in fabrication must be stable. If the metals become unstable, then machines fabricated partly from these metals undergo an undesired obsolescence. An industrial civilization depends in a crucial way upon the stability of metals in its moist (and often impurity-containing) atmospheres.

We spoke of the initial division of the One into a volatile / spiritual aspect and a fixed / material aspect. The Sulfur exhibits the fire and air qualities of the volatile aspect while Salt exhibits the water and earth qualities of the fixed. The Mercury acts in both worlds and can be of a fixed or volatile nature.
