Some Biological Properties.—Isothiazole-3(or S)-carboxaldoximes and their 2-JV-methylated derivatives are therapeutically active against poisoning by organophosphorus compounds e.g. Sarin, Partoxon), comparing favourably with P2S (j.e. 2-hydroxyiminomethyl-l-methyl-pyridinium methanesulphonate), a generally accepted antidote for this purpose.  

Compounds (119)—(122) possess potent, though short-lasting, hypotensive action (119) has also pronounced parasympaticolytic properties, but simultaneously depresses the respiratory centre.

The following discussion of hydroxamic acids includes saturated systems, e.g., 2, compounds such as 3, derived from aromatic systems, 7V-hydroxyimides such as 7V-hydroxyglutarimide (78), and certain of their derivatives including thiohydroxamic acids. Naturally occurring cyclic hydroxamic acids are discussed to show the range of structural types that has been found, hut macrocyclic polyhydroxamic acids are mentioned very briefly, because several comprehensive reviews of these compounds are already available. The main purpose of this review is to summarize the methods available for the synthesis of cyclic hydroxamic acids, to outline their characteristic reactions, and to present some useful physical data. Folic acid is vital for both humans and bacteria. Bacteria synthesize this compound, but humans are unable to synthesize it and, consequently, obtain the necessary amounts from the diet, principally from green vegetables and yeast. This allows selectivity of action. Therefore, sulfa drugs are toxic to bacteria because folic acid biosynthesis is inhibited, whereas they produce little or no ill effects in humans. The structural relationships between carboxylic acids and sulfonic acids that we have observed in rationalizing chemical reactivity are now seen to extend to some biological properties.
