Preferential interactions are measured experimentally by dialysis equilibrium experiments, using Eq.l. Since the total concentration of ligand is high (> 0.5), the difference in concentrations inside and outside the dialysis bag is very small. This requires highly sensitive techniques for detecting the difference. The most frequently used techniques are high precision densimetry and differential refractometry. In both techniques, after attainment of dialysis equilibrium the proper physical parameter is measured and used directly to calculate the preferential interaction, which is given by the difference in these parameters measured at dialysis equilibrium of the system (where the reference solvent is the dialyte) (constant P3) and at identical solvent composition in the solution and the reference solvent (constant m3). [Pg.278]
