Sol-gel hybrid

Hydroxy-terminated PDMS, however, has disadvantages. The monofunctional ends limit the number of connections between the polymer (or oligomer) molecule and the glass network to two. This limitation raises the possibility that some PDMS molecules are not tied at both ends to the glass network if the polycondensation does not go to completion i.e. there may be "dangling" or loose PDMS chains in the final sol-gel material. This occurance of free ends would indeed be anticipated since the extent of reaction most likely is not 100%. Hence, the physical properties, specifically the mechanical behavior of the overall material, would be expected to suffer as a result of loose PDMS chains in the system. Disregarding this potential problem, the mechanical behavior of the sol-gel hybrids are, ultimately, influenced by the mechanical behavior of the modifying elastomer ... [Pg.355]

As shown, for instance, by the lack of any sol-gel catalyst cited in a recent, thorough review covering tens of industrial applications of sol-gel hybrid materials C. Sanchez, B. Julian, P. Belleville and M. Popall, Applications of hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites, J. Mater. Chem., 2005, 15, 3559. [Pg.140]

And now think of the facade of a house painted with one of those new paints containing the sol-gel hybrid formulation recently commercialized by the world s largest chemical company (Chapter 4) that now will retain its fresh aspect for years. [Pg.198]

Some of the earliest sol-gel hybrids were achieved by monomer infiltration into previously formed silica gel. Starting with a dried silica gel (xerogel), the porous shape is filled with monomer. The monomer is polymerized in situ. This is shown schematically in Figure 5. Interpenetration is achieved when the impregnating monomer polymerizes in the open pores of the rigid silica matrix. [Pg.2343]

A performant reagentless ECL system for H2O2 detection based on electrop-olymerized luminol on pre-treated screen-printed electrodes was developed [64]. An ECL biosensor based on carboxylic acid-functionaUzed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CCX)H-F-MWNT) and Au nanoparticles [65] and immobilization in sol-gel hybrid material was fabricated for sensing the efficiency of ethanol. The intensity of ECL increased linearly with ethanol concentration from 2.5 x 10 5.0 X 10 M and detection limit was 1.0 x 10 M [66]. [Pg.129]

However, the development step which involves the use of organic solvents may potentially decrease the surface quality of the optical elements introducing high losses in the waveguide. In the last years, it has been demonstrated that it is possible to fabricate directly optical structures in sol-gel hybrids by using only the exposure step [82, 84, 85]. This direct photo-imprinting enabled the simple and cheap... [Pg.141]
