With careful selection of the combination of starting alkoxides and appropriate synthesis conditions, silica-based sol-gel technology is now widely applied to the conservation of art objects and cultural heritage. For example, a hybrid sol-gel coating protects the fourteenth-century... [Pg.104]

In a tetralkoxysilane/alkyltrialkoxysilane system, the hydrolysis and condensation reactions proceed not only between similar precursor molecules but also between the two different precursor species. Figure 8.3 illustrates a simplified scheme of hydrolysis and condensafion reactions in a hybrid system containing TMOS and an alkyltrimethoxysilane. Notice the difference from the scheme in Figure 8.1 the alkyl group, represented by R, does not participate in the hydrolysis and condensation reactions that lead to the silica monolith. The sol-gel process kinetics in a hybrid sol-gel... [Pg.396]

This chapter will not belabor in great detail the synthesis and structure-property behavior of those systems that have been prepared within our laboratory. Rather, some of the basic concepts involved in preparing these hybrid sol-gel materials will be reviewed. An overview of methods, including those routes taken by other researchers, will be presented. However, greater emphasis will be given to those materials that we have prepared, primarily because only limited structure-property studies have been carried out by other workers in the field. Further details of our studies on many of the hybrid materials (initially denoted as ceramers ) can be found elsewhere (i-9). [Pg.208]

Convenient sol-gel processing, compaction, and firing allow the synthesis of optically clear ceramics. Two examples are presented in Figure 12.6, a ferroelectric PLZT 65/35 ceramic prepared by hybrid sol-gel route and a mulhte matrix prepared using aluminum-sihcon ester and silicon-methoxide. Note the opaque skin around the transparent PLZT ceramics is related to PbO loss. When a partial pressure higher than the equihbrium pressure required to avoid any PbO excess... [Pg.98]

Meille et al. [127] described in detail a hybrid sol-gel/suspension method for coating silicon structures with alumina. Because the channel sizes were very small, the deposited layers were not to exceed 1 pm in thickness. Therefore, the authors used suspensions with particle sizes in the nanometer range and low concentrations (between 0.5 and 5 wt%). An acidic suspension of boehmite was prepared. The boehmite dissolves partially and forms Al-O-Al polymers, which help to anchor the particles to the surface. The resultant layers were subsequently characterized and impregnated with platinum acetylacetonate. [Pg.96]

Hybrid Sol-Gel Photopolymerization Photosensitive organic-inorganic sol-gel glasses are interesting alternative materials that combine the properties of glasses and polymers [316]. A typical hybrid sol-gel material consists (10.88) in an acrylated silane derivative (which in a first step, leads to a glass-like material via hydrolysis and condensation) and a photoinitiator that allows the free radical photopolymerization of the acrylate. The requirements for the choice of the photoinitiator in such a matrix are crucial solubility, thermal stability, PH compatibility, polarity, and so on. [Pg.405]

Fe-doped glasses and composites were prepared by hybrid sol-gel process, modified in the part of doping technique. The UV-VIS spectra and XRD-investigation show both the presence of oxide and fluoridecomplexes in the glass matrices. [Pg.389]
