His first triumph was the publication in 1957 of The Hidden Persuaders, a book about the techniques used by advertisers to sell their products. The book went on to become a New York Times best-seller, with sales of more than a million copies. The access to plant biodiversity from natural habitats is fraught with legal complication, especially for broad-scale corporate campaigns involving the collection of hundreds, or even thousands, of species. Furthermore, many plants have been employed for ritual or medicinal uses and their commodification has sociological implications not addressed by IP considerations. The resolution of these issues, discussed in detail in the Chapter 4, is complicated by the asymmetry between biodiversity-rich developing nations and technology-rich Western countries. [Pg.149]

In spite of these works, giving a clear definition of social acceptance is still difficult. Only case studies are available and each one refers to singular factors. In fact, social acceptance is not a concept but a very practical - but imprecise - notion. Surrounding this notion needs a large overview of works, in sociological and political fields and also in marketing issues. [Pg.398]
