Slow pain

Compare and contrast fast pain and slow pain... [Pg.77]

Within the realm of human toxicity, cancer is probably the illness that is most feared by society, since it is a difficult disease to treat and cure, and often culminates in a slow, painful, emaciating death. Hence chemicals that are known to cause, or are even suspected of causing, cancer are generally less tolerated and are regulated more stringently than chemicals that do not cause cancer but may cause other toxicities that are associated with lower morbidity and mortality, and for which better treatment modalities exist (e.g., nephrotoxicity). [Pg.10]

Exposure is usually by inhalation. It s compounds can cause dermatitis, acute pnemnonitis, acute lung disease and a specific disease (beryllium disease), that erodes the limgs leading to lung cancer, making it hard to walk, causing severe pain and exhaustion, and usually resulting in a slow, painful death by suffocation. [Pg.212]

Acetic anhydride penetrates the skin quickly and painfully forming bums and bUsters that are slow to heal. Anhydride is especially dangerous to the deUcate tissues of the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. The odor threshold is 0.49 mg/m, but the eyes are affected by as Httie as 0.36 mg/m and electroencephalogram patterns are altered by only 0.18 mg/m. When handling acetic anhydride, mbber gloves that are free of pinholes are recommended for the hands, as well as plastic goggles for the eyes, and face-masks to cover the face and ears. [Pg.79]

R = / -C H ), in low doses, exhibits the former behavior and is used primarily as an extradural agent in obstetrics. The lowest effective extradural concentration of etidocaine (21, X = CH, R = R = 2H, R = / -C H ), however, shows both adequate sensory and profound motor blockade so that it is useful in surgical situations where maximum neuromuscular blockade is necessary. In an isolated nerve preparation, bupivacaine blocks unmyelinated C fibers which are mainly responsible for pain perception at a much greater extent than the myelinated A fibers which carry motor impulses. It is postulated that absorption of bupivacaine by the vasculature at the site of injection, combined with the slow diffusion of this agent, results in an insufficient amount of the drug penetrating the large A fibers to cause motor conduction blockade. Clinically, motor block can be observed in some procedures. [Pg.414]

Lethal Arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are a second significant source of cardiovascular problems. An arrhythmia is an abnormal or irregular heart rhythm. Bradyarrhythmias result in heart rates that are too slow tachyarrhythmias cause abnormally fast rates. A bradyarrhythmia can be debiUtating, causing a person to be short of breath, unable to climb stairs, black out, or even to go into cardiac arrest. Tachyarrhythmias can be un settling and painful at best, life-threatening at worst. [Pg.180]

Electrochemical techniques have been used for years to study fundamental phenomenological corrosion reactions of metals in corrosive environments. Unfortunately, the learning curve in the reduction of these elec trochemical theories to practice has been painfully slow. However, a recent survey has shown that many organizations in the... [Pg.2429]

Of the four halogens, iodine is the weakest oxidizing agent. Tincture of iodine, a 10% solution of I2 in alcohol, is sometimes used as an antiseptic. Hospitals most often use a product called povidone-iodine, a quite powerful iodine-containing antiseptic and disinfectant, which can be diluted with water to the desired strength. These applications of molecular iodine should not delude you into thinking that the solid is harmless. On the contrary, if I2(s) is allowed to remain in contact with your skin, it can cause painful bums that are slow to heal. [Pg.558]

In patients with breast carcinoma or prostatic carcinoma, the nurse observes for and evaluates signs indicating a response to therapy, for example, a relief of pain, an increase in appetite, a feeling of well-being. In prostatic carcinoma, the response to therapy may be rapid, but in breast carcinoma the response is usually slow. [Pg.551]

Hypothyroid myopathy occurs in about 30% of patients with hypothyroidism irrespective of its cause. Muscle pain, cramps, and stiffness may be seen, and are often exacerbated by cold weather. Pseudomyotonic features of delayed muscle contraction and relaxation are common. Myoedema (the mounding phenomenon) is due to the painless, electrically silent contracture produced on direct percussion. Muscle biopsy often shows a predominance of type 1 (slow-twitch) fibers, again analogous to that seen in experimental hypothyroidism (Figure 22). Muscle hypertrophy with weakness and slowness of movement occurs in the Debre-Semelaigne syndrome seen in severely hypothyroid children, and Hoffman s syndrome is a similar condition seen in adults with hypothyroidism, but is also accompanied by painful spasms. [Pg.338]

Currently, treatment of DSP and ATN is similar to many other neuropathies that have predominantly painful sensory involvement (Mendell and Sahenk 2003 Gonzalez-Duarte et al. 2007). It is purely symptomatic as there are no proven regenerative therapies to reverse the underlying process. An 8-month prospective pilot study reported an improvement in subjective quantitative sensory testing (QST) in HIV-infected patients who responded to HAART (Martin et al. 2000). The patients who did not respond to HAART did not show any improvements in QST. It is possible that suppression of viral load will slow the progression of DSP. Some studies have found a correlation between viral load and incidence (Childs et al. 1999), or severity (Simpson et al. 2002) of sensory neuropathy. Others, however, did not find any correlation between plasma viral loads and incidence of DSP or ATN (Brew et al. 2003). [Pg.76]

Tea extracts have been demonstrated to inhibit a wide range of inflammatory responses and may be useful in treating chronic inflammatory states. For example, rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease that causes pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of function in the joints. The antioxidants in green tea may prevent or reduce the severity of these symptoms by reducing inflammation and slowing cartilage breakdown (Adcocks et al, 2002 Haqqi et al, 1999). [Pg.136]
