Sleeve nuts

Considerable inconvenience is sometimes encountered when setting the tower in place because it is difficult to lower the heavy vessel over the foundation bolts without bending them or damaging the threads. Figure 11-2 illustrates this difficulty. A sleeve nut is welded to the top of the bolt. It is placed so that the top of the nut lies slightly below the surface of the concrete, with a sheet metal sleeve around it. The tower may then be placed in position without interference from the bolts. Stud bolts are next inserted through the lugs on the tower, and screwed into sleeve nuts from the top. [Pg.362]

Designers faced with this dilemma in die past have come up with special nuts for high pressure applications. They are called sleeve nuts. [Pg.546]

Sleeve nuts can be made much smaller in diameter than nuts for the same diameter. In addition the spacing between studs will not be based on wrench clearances, but on whatever tightening device is utilized. [Pg.546]

In this case, the nut is not there to create the stud tension, but only used to secure the elongation of the stud. Sleeve nuts achieve this goal with a minimum of metal. Sleeved nuts may have holes drilled in them to facilitate the turning of the nut during stud elongation. [Pg.546]

Sleeve nuts have longer threads to develop full strength as opposed to nuts. Sleeve nuts should have a minimum of 10 threads to ensure full strength. [Pg.546]

The hydraulieally tensioned, radial-fit bolt (Figure 6-32) replaees the traditional turbine shaft eoupling bolt and is reusable. The main body of the bolt is threaded at eaeh end and has a slight taper on the eenter seetion, whieh engages with the similarly internally tapered sleeve and the two nuts. The bolt is taper-bored at eaeh end to aeeept the puller that is part of the hydraulie tensioning system. [Pg.371]

To install the bolt body, it is inserted in the hole through the two flanges with the sleeve in the elearanee position. Hydraulie pressure pushes the sleeve into the final (interferenee) fitted position, and the puller draws the bolt baek into the sleeve. The nut is fitted at one end and the bolt is hydraulieally tensioned with the other nut. The entire proeess takes about 15 min per bolt. [Pg.371]

The fittings are made of steel, aluminum alloy, or bronze. The fitting used in a connection should be made of the same material as that of the sleeve, the nut and the tubing. For example, use steel connectors with steel tubing and aluminum alloy connectors with aluminum alloy tubing. Fittings are made in union, 45° and 90° elbows, tee, and various other shapes. The available configurations for these fittings are basically T, cross, straight with options for either all tube ends, or tube to NPT. The tube connecting ends consist of a nut with two sleeves (ferrules) that slip over the tubing. The sleeves are compressed and locked into the tubing by tightening the nut to create a sealed connection. For this type, do not use any thread compound or tape on the tube end connection threaded nut. You can use tape on the NPT side, however. [Pg.80]
